Why would you want three 1st rounders next year when you are getting close now? If they can't pay 1 1st rounder now, how will they pay 3 next year?

you first have to answer the question if you would pay the MLB penalties imposed to sign Appel..

they offered him the max that MLB would let them.

it wasn't an issue of IF they could pay him, they clearly could....

this whole discussion so clearly proves my point that the average fan is in NO more of a position to evaluate a team's moves than a fan

What if it was Strasburg instead of Appel?

right!

isn't it SMARTER to have players on your team that play good and get paid little!?!?

then trade them when they make ALOT and are gonna suck?

If you're a small-market team, YES

If you want to win, players see thru the BS and won't consider your team.

Pitt was very interested in Dempster, he wanted no part of Pitt. Why is that?

If you're willing to wait for them to develop it is. Not waiting (buying up huge free agent contracts) and then unloading isn't very wise at all.

i think we are on very separate tangents...

my post above about getting the players listed above was in reponse to the idea that they came from the Pirates farm system

To me, trading for prospects isn't much different than bringing them up in your own farm system. Both require solid scouting.

They were able to get some nice bargains for those players. I don't know if their subsequent performances are more a factor of well-timed decisions by the Pirates or perhaps a sudden lack of motivation that may accompany a player signing a huge contract. It's hard to say.

I was just contrasting the differences between those situations and the Marlins current situation since that's where this conversation originated.

scouting a guy like Jason Bay in the SD system is VERY different from scouting a guy like Jason Bay as a High schooler and/or college player, making a decision to draft him, deciding whether he was worth the asking price to sign him, developing him ect.

they didn't have to wait for them to develop by the way... they hit the ground running for the most part..

when the Pirates traded for a guy like Bay or Wilson or Sanchez, they were MLB ready they'd PROVEN something.... at the professional level

stark contrast... I see your point

but the Pirates were taking advantage of team's desperate for BIGGER IMPACT, IMMEDIATELY... that didn't mind over paying for a guy like Xavier Nady or Nate McClouth (whom by the way the Pirates signed BEFORE trading him)

if the Pirates don't trade those two "stars" of their 2009 outfield they would be winning at a 45% rate again this year.

obviously these minor details aren't remembered by anyone but the guys paid to tweet about it and obsessed fans like myself

I think we can agree that the marlins signed players (joe sheehan blog i posted) for the intent of selling tix and hope to win. The fallback is to dump salary since people bought the tix and are now stuck with em.

Jason Bay had 117 PA's before joining the Pirates. Yeah, it's different in the respect that you get to see them at a higher level. But a lot of good AAA players don't perform well in the majors.

Who knows what happened to Nady and McClouth. It was like a light switch with those two.

Nady had some arm injuries that limited his career. McClouth, he really fell off fast.
