Jason Bay had 117 PA's before joining the Pirates. Yeah, it's different in the respect that you get to see them at a higher level. But a lot of good AAA players don't perform well in the majors.

Who knows what happened to Nady and McClouth. It was like a light switch with those two.

I feel like we had this discussion before.... but you were on the other side of it.... as it pertained to jesus montero

again.. HUGH difference between scouting/developing a 18 year old or 22 year old and DEVELOPING them two things the Pirates sucked at. and cherry picking prospects with MLB experience from desperate teams

Pirates got lucky no doubt...

but my only thesis in this discussion was that many "fanboys" of baseball like FW just have knee jerk reactions and LONG 13 year generalizations that actual data and recent history won't change.

perfectly illustrated by the fact that FW thinks the pirates give away good players

perfectly illustrated by the fact the FW thinks the pirates don't spend $ in the draft

sometimes it pays to hold of judgement for longer than 24 hrs

sometimes it pays to hold of on judgement until you look deeper

Jason Schmidt?? :hehe:

Appel could help them next year, yet the Pirates think 3 2013 1st rounders are more valuable. None of those 1st rounders being a top 6 pick.

it wasn't the extra picks... for the record they only get 1 extra for missing on Appel... number 9 I think

they get the other one from mlb for sucking...

but they did make it known they knew full well that being the one team to draft a guy that wanted high money was a calculated risk and they saw pluses on both sides

it was to not pay too much for a guy that wasn't THAT talented, too much in $ and too much in getting penlized picks...

he wouldn't help next year

its very rare it happens like that.

great list

how did LAA get that 25th pick? how many of those top 6 helped their team in 2010? how many helped in 2011? 2012?

mlb draft is some crazy shit yo!

Appel will what?

you keep avoiding answering my confusion on bringing S.S up?

You said Pitt will lose next year's #1 and pay a tax for signing Appel. From what I've seen, he was worth that price (Joe Sheehan, Baseball America to start). Lets say it was Strasburg, would Pitt still have that same attitude? I feel they are still playing smallball when it comes to big-time talent decisions. Pitt is in a position to add studs, not roster fillers.

I know they have had two good drafts in a row also. Its about time they do so. I don't know if its their draft, development, philosophy or what.

Compensation pick for losing Texiaria

Pirates get a 9th compensation pick for Appel, hopefully they do like LAA!!!!

Pirates don't need help from the draft for next year in all honesty...

they got 3 #1 stud starters in the system

and they take their time developing them that is for sure...

too much time, as i'm sure 2 out of the 3 aces will need tommy john surgery in the next 2 years

If the pirates had had the #1 overall, and if Appel had been actually good and not over-rated and was a clear #1 they WOULD have signed him

it was a piss poor draft and even the cubs were not impressed enough to give Appel a shot, but they weren't in the position to play hard ball with Boras and walk away from the table....

again

why "let's say it was strasburg"????

what ifs??????? what if it was Mickey Mantle?

dumb dumb argument

it WASN'T

Appel sucks appel wasn't throwing 103

if Appel=strasburg

guess what?

he would go #1 overall

Yeah. Similar discussion with Montero. I misquoted Bay's PA's in that last post. He only had 10 with the Padres.

Overall, I agree with you on scouting. Montero and Bay were putting up similar numbers in the minors. Pretty much a no-brainer for the Pirates.

Yeah. There are certainly some long-standing misconceptions about teams. But the Marlins trades aren't very complex. I don't think they got the best of either one of them in a seller's market - beside the fact that they paid a bunch of money for those free agents and then throw in the towel in July. Just seems very suspect and lends credence to the rumor that Loria was trying to unload the team.
