Alright so we all know what has passed. Breaking Bad ended classicly, Dex fizzled out, Eastbound and Down will be further realized as three stooge classic shit in later years.

We need a list moving forward and when.

True Detective 1.12.2014 I see as the next classic

watching it it now, thanks

It is the start of award season and that gives me a direction in my movie watching for the next while, so:

12 Years a Slave (2013) - I'm not going to give any specific spoilers but there may be spoilers about the general direction of things so possibly beware.

This is a good movie. It is a serious movie giving a serious treatment to the serious topic of slavery - i.e. it is NOT Django Unchained.

I am not absolutely gaga about it and I don't see it as having much rewatch value. There is not much story; I could summarize the whole thing in a few sentences. It could be a 10 minute movie - but what it mainly is is a catalogue of terrible things humans do and have done to them. I can't say that I learned much. I knew about slavery. There were some specific forms of cruelty that maybe hadn't occurred to me before.

Big picture: it carries an important message and it delivers it well.

Seems certain to be nominated for Best Picture in all the big awards. Chiwetel Ejiafor will get a lot of acting noms. Obviously I need to see what else is out there but I doubt it will have my vote for either. But it's good and he is good. Not blow-me-away. But good.

Captain Phillips (2013) - Highly overrated movie IMO.

Not that it's bad - it's a moderate thumbs up - but it has been getting Best Picture buzz and whatnot. Currently 8.1 at imdb. No.

It's a 1-note movie. It just keeps doing the same thing over and over for 2 hours and fifteen. Hysterical threatening pirate threatens. Captain Phillips feels threatened. Rinse and repeat. They could have, in my opinion, cut half an hour off it and had a much better movie. 45 minutes even. 1 thing happens and it keeps happening. That's it.

The eponymous character - not particularly compelling. A few somewhat heroic gestures in passing but mostly just an uninteresting victim.

And confounding. Why do Americans who arm themselves to the teeth at home when there is nothing going on, not have any guns when they are cruising around the horn of Africa in Somali waters? I imagine there is a logical reason for that which I will find out shortly but it just seems weird. All these Americans in a legitimately dangerous place. Nary a gun. :dunno:

Despite my complaining, the movie is a thumbs up. The set up and the way it ends, I found interesting. But the extreme excitement about it, I do not understand.

I thought the S3 finale of Homeland was good. I didn't think they'd go there. I'll be around for S4 if there is one.

I enjoyed S1 of Masters of Sex, too. But I don't think there is a more unlikeable character than Dr. William Masters on TV right now.

He is aggressively unlikable. It feels like it was a conscious goal of the creators to try and top other anti-heroes (Don Draper, Walter White, Tony Soprano).

Like the show in general, there is always this hint of contrivance. He feels more like a calculated effect than a person. He is a tool - damn you! - but then he has a momentary flash of tenderness - awwww - but then he slams the door. He is a manipulation.

Now if it turns out that it is a very accurate portrayal of the actual guy, I guess I'm an idiot.

Well said. :handshake:

I always wonder to myself while watching the show, "self, could this guy really have been that much of a stick in the mud, miserable douche?"

HBO on mute here as I work I look up and see a commercial for one series about school girls with what I think is a guy dressed up as a girl, pretty sure Muddy eluded to this earlier - who digs this shit? won't be watching

The other is some show Looking - listen no problem with homosexuals but I'm not trying to see dudes kissing each other on my down time or any other time, won't be watching

10.2014 is so far out for that Saul shit which I am also very much looking forward too Muddy, we need it NOW

We lost Eastbound, Breaking Bad and yes I know Dex tailed out but it too and the fill ins besides True Detective are looking rough so far :cono:

The Five Year Engagement is a solid couples movie. The silliness you'd expect from a Jason Segel movie and where as the spark wasn't as great as with he and Emily Blunt in this as it was with he and Mila Kunis in Forgetting Sarah Marshall it's still a very solid flick. Chris Pratt steals the show as the hilarious best friend. Well written and recommended for laid back couples viewing and doable if you want to solo it as well. 6.4 bacs.

Lee Daniels The Butler (2013) - A little exercise in post-Forrest-Gump-ism here.

It's okay. Not bad. I'm sure right wingers have anti-The-Butler talking points all lined up, but it is a reasonable flick. Certainly not great. There's no real coherence. No wow factor. I can't see it winning any major awards. But it has some elements that are nice enough.

Kinda like Forrest Gump but more targeted and without the humor.

I'll say, oh, 6.8 out of 10.
