Oh shit, on my list of TV shows I watch I forget one of the best: Boardwalk Empire

That's prolly because so far I have just watched it on my computer so it doesn't feel like an actual current show. But it is. I guess there will be new episodes in the not-too distant future which I will watch on TV. I wonder what night it will be on.

Sunday I bet.

*Spoiler Alert*

BE being filmed on my block a few months ago:

So John Oliver's stint hosting The Daily Show is over. I guess there will be a couple weeks of reruns and then Jon Stewart will be back.

I thought Oliver did a very good job. I am probably repeating myself but I would WAY rather watch a John Oliver Show than the Colbert Report.

Paranormal Witness - SyFy Channel - Wednesday 8pm

What a show. If you like thrillers, and like being scared check this show out. Stories are narrated by those who these events happened to and actors play out the scenes. These are all true stories and so far I haven't seen an episode where there's only one person involved. It's a few different people telling what happened. In a nutshell I get the same feeling after watching this as when I watched Unsolved Mysteries. Not sure if that show would still scare me the same way today, but you get the idea. Creepy, haunting, and visceral. If you're into that, this is for you.

Here's a teaser:

I wonder what it would have been like if you were a movie buff like me in 1974. The Godfather came out a couple years before and you were blown away. I don't even know what would have been my favorite movie heading into that. Probably my whole top 50 movies right now is The Godfather(s) and movies since then.

I mean, there were some nice movies floating around. I'd have to think about it. I'm not goofy for Casablanca or Citizen Kane or Lawrence of Arabia and whatnot. But there had been some respectable movies.

But The Godfather would have been a revolutionary experience for me. It would be the best movie of all time by a huge margin.

It was a different world. No DVD's. I probably would have gone out to the theatre and seen it a few times. I guess it would have come to regular TV by then - censored ?? There was no recording and rewatching. Every viewing would have been a planned event.

So that happens and then you hear about this sequel and you wait and wait. And finally you're sitting there in the theatre and it starts - you don't know what to expect - sometimes sequels just suck - well, I'm not even sure how much that was the feeling back then - maybe sucky sequels are a more modern phenomenon - but anyway, you're sitting there - suddenly there's Michael Corleone and there's that music.

Man I can just imagine the thrill I would have felt at that moment.

So the discussion topic for today, for those who choose to accept it, is what is/are the best/favorite movie(s) before The Godfather. Meaning 1972.

Favorite, top 10, whatever.

This has been stuck in my head since I recently rewatched The Godfather 1 & 2 and I wondered what would have been my favorite movies going into those releases (not so much as the 9 year-old that I was, but based on current taste.)

The previous Best Picture list has some candidates for me. In The Heat of the Night. A Man For All Seasons.

There are the conventional mainstream critics choices: Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Singin' in the Rain, Gone With The Wind. All thumbs up movies for me but not gaga.

There are the slightly off-beat critics choices like The French Connection, The Graduate. Again, I'm not gaga.

I used to love Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. That is probably on my list although I haven't seen it for a long time and am not sure how it holds up.

Anyway, just curious what the assembled hordes might have to say about this.

Not sure I've watched 10 movies from before 1972.

Going through the IMDB Top 250, I've seen:

A Clockwork Orange
2001
Citizen Kane
Vertigo
The Great Escape
Touch of Evil
The Wizard of Oz
Ben-Hur
Les 400 coups
(The 400 Blows)
Rosemary's Baby

Going to watch Roman Holiday tomorrow at Pecaut Square. Free outdoors screening as part of the TIFF.

Of those, I would rank The Wizard of Oz at the very top. Mind-boggling achievement.
