So I have this music project I've been working on

The shovel/clouds are perfect thematically but, I agree, not splashy. I have adjusted the aspect but even so. About the only thing I can say about it is, when you look at a lot of cover art, they all try so hard to be lookit-me-with-the-zaniness!!! So much so that they all blend together (for me). The shovel actually stands out in its lack of desperation.

However that's my point of view and I am probably the exception. Maybe I should just be conventional (which, in this case, means a bit whacky).

Which brings it all back to a question I have asked a thousand times about a thousand decisions since I started the project: am I doing it for myself or "the masses."

There is still no definite answer to that. Sitting at about 77.8% for myself.

If I had more artistic ability, I would make it so the shovel was digging into a person's brain. I could make a pretty elaborate surrealist vision right down to the expression on the person's face, and any number of little background details that have something to do with the music. Interesting juxtaposition of the scene above and below. But I can't.

Anyway still working on it. Got a couple other possibilities. One is slightly less on-the-nose but still somewhat appropriate and definitely more eye-grabbing.

Still pondering.

Frank Zappa looks like he spent a lot of money on album art.

Looking at this. Splashier - but definitely a little off target as far as the metaphor.

Harmony prefers the shovel/clouds. She doesn't actually know the project any more than anyone else - but I think prefer it too. It captures the metaphor perfectly. Kinda has to be the shovel/clouds.
