I agree $700 for a husband and wife would not be bad...but it's just me! I think $610 is outrageous but then again just one of my scripts is over $600 per month, so I am still coming out ahead I guess. Don't get me started on healthcare costs either. It's shameful.

Seems like a lot to me. Our plan is only $500 (for 3 people), and I have more pre-existing conditions that they don't like than you can imagine. Of course they don't appear to cover any of my bills so I'm not sure what the $500 is for.

They have to insure you but you still have to go thru a lengthy questionare and your Pre existing conditions set your premium. They only have to insure you...there is no promise of a cheap premium...mine was quoted about $600 a month on the Colorado exchange. I would assume it would be similar in SD.

Pretty sure that's not the case, anymore. From the Colorado Exchange website:

"You will not be asked to provide your health history, other than whether you use tobacco or if you are pregnant."

I think that other than tobacco users, the price of your plan will only be based on which benefits/deductibles you choose, not health history.

I think that what you described was an earlier stage of the rollout.

Wow. Maybe so. Isn't one of the conditions that you are not able to qualify for individual private plans? I think Ihad to show 2 letters of denial from private insurance companies to get on it...otherwise wouldn't everyone just abandon their individual policy and go to the exchange? I will have to read up on this. I can hardly believe it would be this easy for me to get a cheaper plan. What do they base the premiums on?????

Premiums will be set based on the entire pool of applicants. You'll be benefiting from all the healthier applicants, since everyone's premiums will be the same for a given plan.

Everyone can use the exchange, but if you're eligible for an employer-provided plan, medicare/medicaid, you can't take advantage of the subsidies.

Ok I'm not on an employer provided plan...but was eligible for a conversion from that plan after Cobra ended. I don't get that if you qualify for Medicaid you don't qualify for the subsidies...would seem Medicaid>subsidies. I could probably document financials either way if needed to...I just want to know if I can get off my plan since I am currently on it and qualify for it even though it is technically not "employer sponsored" but originated there.

oh and I don't want to be on "assistance," but if the exchange provides an acceptable premium would be interest in changing from Cigna $610/month if possible. Oh, and I am not doing anything illegal lol..it's complicated on the financials but if have to open up my life, tax returns, bank statements etc to them I would not be interested in changing.

One more thing I have to consider...if I got on the Colorado exchange but all my providers are in South Dakota would that raise red flags and harm my eligibility? I currently have an open access plan on Cigna and they have never questioned anything but I still have everything in my Colorado ...my house, my mail goes there, car tags etc....I haven't figured out all this residency stuff yet. I don't know if from a legal view I would be considered a Colo or SD resident?

this sounds to me like FF qualified for the program that gives medical treatment for the poor. That has been around forever in Denver. Or else FF is full of shit.
Its true that you don't hear much discussion about the programs that actually are available. The whole health care debate (Obamacare) may be a farce to get individuals to pay more of what the govt is already paying for. Because they are bastards.

I can post up my card when I get it if it helps motivate you to change your old ways.

How does one "qualify" for healthcare?

I found a program offered to residents in California that have been laid-off or have low-income. I called the medical center listed on their website and made an appointment to apply or qualify. She reviewed my documents in 30 minutes and sent me on my way.

wtf is this, i've spent 20k this year

From my understanding, which is very limited, my program is offered to citizens of California only. At the end of the year if I don't have a full time position I will then be transferred to "obamacare." I will be getting a card and pamphlet in two weeks that might help answer more questions.

You definitely are eligible to ditch your plan and purchase a plan on the exchange. You are also eligible for subsidies, which are, I believe, only based on income. You shouldn't have to dig into your financials. I expect that you'll pay significantly less for your plan even without subsidies. You'll be able to see the premiums on October 1st.

I have no clue regarding the out-of-state stuff.
