He ended it. She moved to Montreal to do her PhD and he stayed in East Bumblefuck, ON to do his. He wouldn't budge. She was commuting so she could keep dating him, then he dumped her. Dunno how long exactly, most likely a couple years. She be not the fleeting-thing type.

You can only let the fear of hurting someone influence you so much. When my (common-law) marriage broke up, I hurt her so badly I could have justified never getting into a relationship again in my life. I don't want to hurt anyone like that.

But at some point you also want to live - and you have to respect other people enough to let them look after themselves. If you really can be brutally honest, that will be to your credit.

I've been clean for over a month. Longest stretch ever, the previous one had been a week. Roomie knows all that. I told her all about my coke history after I passed the 1-week mark, I was having dreams every night where people were offering me free blow in bars. It was bad. I told her that was my first real attempt at stopping and I gave her permission to go through my stuff if she suspected I was back on it. She accepted the role of "coke deterrent" and she totally didn't have to.
