Just went to the music store and got a bunch of advice and made the initial purchases towards my home recording studio. There are still more steps to be taken - and figuring out the audio interface and software will undoubtedly be a challenge for me - but big picture, things are much simpler and less expensive than I imagined.

Feeling inspired.

This is going to be awesome.

what'd ya get?

So far, I got an audio interface and software to go with it. I got a good microphone for vocal and acoustic guitar micing, plus a mic stand. And I got a couple of reference speakers.

The big thing is what I didn't get. I was thinking I would need a fancy shmancy keyboard and was ready to spend a couple grand. With this audio interface and software, I can use any keyboard with midi. The quality of the keyboard makes no difference. I have a 25 year old electric keyboard which I basically think of as a toy - but I may be able to use it. I'm pretty sure I can but I just need to confirm that it has the right ports. If so, I will need a couple of cables and away I go.

If not, I can just buy a midi keyboard for a hundred bucks or so. In any case, I will have that issue sorted out by the end of today.

I still will probably need to buy an electric guitar - then learn how to play it. That is no small thing. But first step will be getting all this stuff hooked up and becoming familiar with its operation. I don't expect that will be easy since I am such a techno-boob, but I'll just follow the instructions and check out tutorials on YouTube etc and keep plugging away.

I actually may not need an electric guitar at all. From the demonstration I saw of the software, amazing things are possible. I could definitely do good leads just using a keyboard. Some of the rockin' riffs I have in mind may be possible too.

Seeing the demo showed me there is a world of possibilities in front of me. I was a bit worried about how I would deal with drums/beats but that won't be a problem. It has been an exciting day. Soon I will be making the magic happen.
