Random thoughts

I had to go for a bit of a drive this morning so I put in the CD, Hatful of Hollow by The Smiths. As it turned out, my trip was almost exactly the same length as the CD.

For whatever reason, I decided to just focus in on the guitar work the whole time.

My god there is some unusual, remarkable, great guitar work on that.

Marr is in my Top 10 guitarist of All Time.

Whenever I tell people that they laugh in my face.

I tell them to go listen to The Headmasters Ritual.

It is so unusual. Sometimes he's doing little flourishes and it's almost like it's a different song than Morrissey is singing - but it fits together perfectly. I don't know where he stands technically in the world of guitarists but in terms of composition, it really is incredible. I can't think of anything quite like it.

And he is very, very good technically. I remember when I wanted to do a Smiths cover video, the first like 5 songs I wanted to try ended up being just way beyond my abilities. They are deceptively complex.

It's similar to the reason I like David Gilmore so much. I have no doubt Eddie Van Halen can move his fingers faster but Gilmore creates those patient emotional leads that are as powerful and memorable as the vocals.

Gilmore is a different deal than Marr but they are both fascinating composers with the guitar.

Kindly gimme an example of great guitar work by Marr. I don't know anything about him.

Both Van Halen and Gilmour can go suck a dick. Every guy who learned to play guitar in the 80's is crippled in the vibrato dept, all cause of the stupid Floyd Rose tremolo system that VH co-invented. A good vibrato is pretty much essential to play lead guitar.

Oh my. I can't listen to that stuff. It seriously makes me tense. I wanted to kick a cat 0:20 in.

And no, I don't know anything about Marr. You would've asked me who we played with and I would've never come up with the name of the band, and vice versa. Don't know a single song title by them. Here I am typing this after reading your post and I've already forgotten the song titles you mentioned.

I really really hate 80's music. I have issues.

Ok I just went back in. Sounds like nothing but basic rhythm stuff on that track.

:dunno:

I personally don't give a shit about Van Halen. Never listened to them very carefully myself. Not my bag. I just know he has a reputation for moving his fingers fast so he made sense for the point I was trying to make about style over technical ability.

Now Gilmour . . . .

If I had to name my #1 song of all time for guitar work - I would name Shine on You Crazy Diamond.
