I bought a used treadmill off craigslist for $150.

In the morning before work I've been putting movies on my 55 inch TV, and doing various inclines and fast walks/jogs while watching.

I've been averaging 600 calories in an hour.

Yesterday was Joy, today was Creed.

Nice way to start the day.

Razzie nominations for Worst Picture:

Fantastic Four

Fifty Shades of Grey

Jupiter Ascending

Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2

Pixels

Interestingly - to their credit (?) - they have nominated last year's Best Actor Oscar winner - and nominee this year - Eddie Redmayne - as Worst Supporting Actor. That was for his role in Jupiter Ascending. I didn't see it but I did hear some hilariously terrible things.

Do not tell me that it's terrible that there are no black Oscar nominees in the acting categories.

If you want to point to a specific performance by a black person and say that it's better than such-and-such performance that was nominated, I will listen to that. I will talk about that.

But sweeping non-specific offendedness ----> I got no time.

Anomalisa (2015) - This is the stop motion animated piece by Charlie Kaufman, the creative force behind Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It is nominated for (but will not win) the Oscar for Best Animated.

The writing is along familiar Kaufman lines of exploring existence. It is neurotic and lonely and weird. The animation is essential to the fundamental metaphor and it is kind of a hoot.

Most critics seem to love it passionately and throw around words like transcendent and classic. Regular viewers are much more split. It is an hour and a half long.

It certainly has some memorable moments and concepts. I like it. I wanted to be in the camp with the critics who are orgasmic over it but I'm not. Not at this point. I give it an opening rating of 7.1 (with a suspicion that will increase as I think about it more.)

Inside Out (2015) - Clever, thoughtful, engaging Pixar effort with real emotional depth. In the top tier of animated family movies I have ever seen. I would have no problem with it being nominated for Best Picture period. Not actually winning but it is just that excellent at doing what it does.

This will win the Best Animated if the oddsmakers are to be believed (which they almost always are with the Oscars). As for animated, it is bizarre to have it in the same category with Anomalisa but that's how it goes.

8.5 out of 10.

The Critics Choice Awards were last night.

Pretty big surprise to me: Best Director - George Miller for Mad Max, Fury Road

Mad Max also won Best Special Effects. That makes little sense to me. Mad Max was a lot more about stunt work than special effects - and then when they went to the special effects, a bunch of them stuck out like a sore thumb.

Bad calls, I guess is what I'm saying.

Doesn't look like they nominated any more black folk than the Oscars.

I'm way behind on movie reviews I want to share, but here's one everyone should watch.

World of Tomorrow. 17 minute animated short.

world-tomorrow-sundance-hertzfeldt.png

A cloned woman time travels to visit her original self as a child to fetch a memory and share a little information about the future.

It's a perfect little bit of sci-fi. Funny, depressing, interesting. Give it a watch.

You can pay to watch it here, if you want to be a good person:

I think I accidentally downloaded this a while back. Watched for a bit, there was something appealing about it. Kind of an Osmosis Jones concept. But then joy and sadness got lost in the deep recesses of a child's mind and I couldn't take it anymore.
