Say Anything (1989) - I really don't know how much anyone cares when I do my reviews of year old movies - let alone a movie from 1989, but I saw this recently (pretty sure I had seen it before - but it had been so long it was like seeing it for the first time) anyway I have something to say about it and am interested in other comments.

I think this movie is brilliant. It's rare - almost unheard of - for me to say a movie is wildly underrated at imdb but they have this at 7.4 and I'm coming in at 9. I think the premise and the character/relationship development are all plausible and excellent and HOLY FUCKING SHIT where are all the romance movie cliches and the bathroom humor and the whacky misunderstandings and wisecracking slutty sidekick? It's just unrelentlingly thoughtful and authentic, with genuine uncertainty and surprises. The pacing is great.

I do have a few criticisms. There were some definite missteps channeled through the Lily Taylor character. The young leads, while looking perfect and being very likable which was crucial here, had some moments of inconsistency in their peformances.

But I have the good outweighing the bad by a longshot and give it a 8.6 (which is 9 at imdb).

What do you think of The Truman Show (1998) anyway?

There was - and still is to some extent - a lot of buzz about it. It won awards. It is currently an 8.0 at imdb - #212 movie of all time.

I find it overrated. It is watchable and there is some interesting sociological discussion that can come out of it I suppose. Performances are fine. Jim Carrey is very good actually.

But I just find it so ridiculously implausible. It starts with the premise that watching some basically likable but drippy insurance salesman 24/7 for his entire life would be any kind of popular thing. And there are a million points of logistics and scene-by-scene decisions that the characters make and other occurrences.

I get the concept of suspension of disbelief but this movie is just too much for me. I can't invest myself in it at all. I don't see characters; I just see a writer writing.

Not terrible. Overrated is all I'm saying. 6 out of 10.

Muddy, your reviews don't go unnoticed by me! Never reviewed Flight but if say had to buy rental to see it again, would do so! Not good at details but IOO the movie was very good! Probably had to do with Denzel being outstanding! First minute of movie should get a rise out of all men, well all heterosexual men that is!

:betplom:

Love Say Anything. Probably one of my all-time favorites. Agree with everything you said.

I like the originality of the Truman Show and have seen it a number of times, and I always find myself rooting for him despite already knowing the outcome so I guess it works.

Muddy have you seen Ruby Sparks? Would be interested in your take on that one..

I reacted the same way. Didn't care for it. It was a big, uninteresting "what if" IMOWally.

6 Matty Rains sounds about right.

Speaking of movies I have with a 9 rating, I notice The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) with Errol Flynn on there.

That surprises me. I don't remember being that carried away with that movie but I guess I was.

It's particularly surprising considering my very pronounced preference of newer movies over old. I have nothing older than 1970 rated 9 or better.

But there it is.

Errol Flynn was quite a guy, no question about that. I'm currently watching him in Captain Blood and will report shortly.

I didn't find the premise too far-fetched. Look at the crap that people watch on TV today. Thematically, what makes it any different than 99% of the reality television on the air?

I don't remember the details of the movie, but I remember finding the ending especially cheesy. Maybe something about him finding the door to the studio or something? I don't recall exactly. But, likewise, I know it wasn't an impressive movie to me.

Captain Blood (1935) - Pretty fun old swashbuckler with the charismatic Errol Flynn. Many key plot turns based on implausible contrivances - and there is the dubious fundamental matter of how Peter Blood can be our hero when he goes around killing a lot of people that had nothing to do with the thing he wants revenge for.

But what the hell - let's do it! Kill away!

7.4 out of 10.

Speaking of movies I was surprise to see I have rated as 9: The Usual Suspects. If someone had walked up to me yesterday and asked what I thought of it, my response would have been something like, "Pretty good movie. Not an all-time great. Somewhat overrated. But pretty good."

But apparently I do consider it all-time great.

IMO apparently you're right! Always enjoy a Baldwin in a movie! And Gab Bryne IMO underated actor! How the hell did Spacey walk around like that the whole movie? Great acting!

Gabriel Byrne did some great acting in the TV show In Treatment. That was the ultimate actor's show. Sort of the opposite of Law and Order where the actors just need to keep out of the way. If you were going to be on In Treatment, you were going to have to ACT!

Did you ever watch that show?

No I haven't! Do you know where it can be seen?
