Muddy, just saw the movie Flight last week and he was good in it! Now that you bring it up surprised he's not in more movies too!

He was excellent of course in Hotel Rwanada. I hear he was also excellent as Sammy Davis Jr. in The Rat Pack although I have never seen that one. But he's got a good movie resume. Obviously he's still doing movies but when you make that commitment to be lead in a TV show, it feels like a signal.

Dennis Quaid another guy doing TV now, I noticed. Even more impressive movie resume than Cheadle.

It happens.

It looked pretty bad to me but then I saw Russell Crowe so I thought maybe there was something going on. He usually gets himself into okay movies.

A misstep perhaps.

I rewatched Big Fish (2003) recently. I found it to be very good. I arrived at a rating of 7.5 - but then that is not the end of the story because imdb ratings are even numbers only.

I know a lot of people hang on the edge of their seats for my ratings of 9 year old movies - so I had a decision to make.

I didn't really want to call it an 8. That is rarified air for me. That would put it side-by-side with some very good, beloved movies which I just plain consider better. Can I really justify having it with Fargo and Amelie and The Player and American Beauty? But that's just the way it goes; the 7.6's get lumped in with the 8.4's and there is no way around it.

But also - I have some ongoing frustrations surrounding Tim Burton in general. I am resistant to the idea of rewarding him. I don't want him to see this rating and start thinking he has everything figured out.

I thought on it long and hard and ultimately ---> bumped my rating to 7.51. So it goes down as an 8. It's a good movie. Tim Burton's best to date IMO.

The Woman in Black (2012) - Horror show starring Harry Potter from the creeps at Hammer.

First, just gotta say: Daniel Radcliffe is not a great actor. Not yet. And actually, he's not a kid any more; he has reached an age where you can probably say it's not going to happen. I would describe him as "barely competent." But he is Harry Potter and he is super famous so he is probably guaranteed roles for awhile at least. I suspect he is fairly secure financially regardless.

Anyhoo, this movie. Spooky ghost story. I would recommend it to someone who likes the genre. It is well done for that sort of thing.

I am not big on the genre. I judge it the same way I judge referees. If they don't grab my attention by doing something really stupid, they are thumbs up. These sorts of movies almost always do something really stupid sooner or later. However this one was reasonably cool about things.

It was well set up and premised. The story was interesting without being overly complicated and it was patiently and stylishly revealed. There are any number of ways to pick it apart but it's a ghost-in-a-haunted-house story so you just gotta go with it. It was very conventional - and that was alright. You got your constant audio clues about how you're supposed to be feeling. You got your shock-frights.

I actually was creeped out a few times. There were some effective sequences. As I say, I feel like it would be a prime choice for someone who really likes the genre (although the imdb rating is 6.5 which is a bit lower than I would have guessed).

I give it a 6.6

SKYFALL

Good movie, best of the Bonds, action level unmatched. One of the best films of the year for sure. There is a little too much happening in the story, a few things unorganized, and about 20 min too long imo. Javier Bardem kills his role as a wronged former agent with revenge on his mind.

There was one part that made me mad, but I don't want to spoil it for you guys.

8/10

I saw the movie Bridemaids (2011) recently. I almost bailed on it at around the half hour mark but hung in there - and it actually ended up pulling itself together alright. I gave it a 6 at imdb when all was said and done.

I found it was a comedy that mainly got in trouble when it tried to be funny.

Complete agreement. I'm not a fan of Bridesmaids and I feel like a bad vagina carrier for saying that.

Re Skyfall:

I saw a review this morning by Richard Roeper. He gave it an A- and said it was a top 5 Bond movie all-time.

Michael Phillips gave it 3.5 stars (out of 4). Said it was a notch below Casino Royale (the one with Daniel Craig).

Consensus seems to be that it is relatively good Bond.

Don't really give a crap about Bond myself.
