American Horror Story - Season 1 (2011)

I really enjoyed this, and I honestly wasn't expecting to. Like most things, if you don't have my undivided attention in the first episode I'm not watching the series. I was hooked in 5 minutes. I tried the series Weeds out this week and I lasted 15 minutes of the first episode. I am a fan of the horror genre when it is done one of 2 ways, stylish-thriller aka "The Shining" or funny/tongue in cheek aka "Bad Taste" or "Army of Darkness".

The storyline here is interesting in that each season is a different setting. It centers on different characters and locations, including a haunted house, an insane asylum and a witch coven. In the first season it was the haunted house. What makes this a bit different than your run of the mill haunted house is that the dead characters really interact with each other. Without giving too much away a series of murders happened in this house over the course of nearly 100 years and those souls which died on the lot stay there and live out their lives sometimes aware they are dead, other times seemingly trying to get through their day as if they are still alive.

I've never been a huge fan of Dylan McDermott, but he is tolerable as the oversexed psychiatrist. The real highlight of the cast is probably Jessica Lange but there are many other good performances. The reall hook of the show for me though is the speed and pace of the action and the unpredictability of events. You can have a good thriller but if you can guess all the moves, then it's pointless.

This is definitely worth a viewing.

It also doesn't hurt to be able to look at this every so often:

Queued.

Magic Mike (2012) - Well it turns out I am still not gay.

I heard a fair bit of discussion about this movie when it came out and here's what it basically boiled down to: it is a movie about male strippers but it's not about that - it is another well-told story by Steven Soderbergh with male stripping as a backdrop. Anyone looking for lots of hot male stripping will be disappointed.

Then they went on to say that Soderbergh apparently is retiring and this movie is proof that we still need him.

Here is the reality as I saw it: it is a movie with LOADS of male stripping - much of it gratuitous - and a ridiculously unconvincing, simplistic plot that could easily fit into a half hour TV show (with commercials).

If this is all Soderbergh has left, it's probably best to hang it up.

At least we get some Olivia Munn bewbs.

No but seriously man, I do not enjoy male strippers stripping.

Boardwalk Empire - Season 2

Loved season 1 and also loved season 2. Completely absorbing to me.

There are a few things I see as flaws but also many moments of inspiration that earn bonus points leading to a final rating of:

9 out of 10. Same as Season 1.

This is the character I find most interesting right now:

That probably should have been spoilered, Blitty.

I haven't seen S3.

But if it was an oversight no biggie.

It happens.

Anyway, the reason I came to this thread is because I've run out of things to watch and you guys recommend good stuff.

I've already seen:

The Wire
Mad Men
Breaking Bad
Boardwalk (through S2)
Girls (through S1)

Hey Daft have you seen Six Feet Under? That was another good HBO series which I enjoyed the first time through and am about ready to rewatch. It's been a few years. I have it a notch below my all-time favorites but still very good.

Surprised to see it only ran 5 seasons. I would have guessed it was more.

Not sure if it's up your alley or not. It's in a different vein than most of the stuff that has been mentioned. Less guns, more family.

Maybe worth a look. :dunno:

Here's a pic of the family. See if you can guess which one is dead.
