sounds awful, all of it. I bet you people liked Dusk till Dawn or whatever that monstrocity was.

Matty, I wonder what moral angle there was. None would be most likely. Problem is what do you do with the people once you free them? We still havent figured that out. In Russia they gave the serfs land :dunno:

The 2 hours and 45 min went by very fast for me but looking back it would have been incredibly easy to make it 2:20

I basically enjoyed it. 7 is a pretty good rating from me. I have seen all 9 Best Picture nominees now and I think I have it 3rd. Which is kind of ridiculous given what it is - and what it isn't. Bad year for Best Picture nominees I guess. But it's got a basic watchability that some others lack.

I was checking the clock to see how much time is left less than several of the others, I'll say that.

Haha - man those are not questions for Django Unchained. The moral angle is revenge. Slavery is just a tool to build the hatred and make the catharsis sweeter. It is definitely not a sociological exploration.

If you were talking about Lincoln, there is more thoughtful discussion of those deeper issues.

Django is about fountains of blood and hunks of brain flying about.

Pulp Fiction on first appearance is a great film. But learning about Tarantino and putting it in context takes away from that greatness.

Now all of a sudden Marsales(?) getting fucked in the ass looks no longer a complicated and original commentary on something important.

Does anyone remember when 60 Minutes was the #1 show on TV? Not talking about the #1 news show or the #1 weekend show - it was week-in-week-out the #1 rated overall show on TV - for a good length of time.

I remember the era. Mid 80's I would guess??? I spent a lot of time hanging out at my brother's place which was a constant guy-party house. Sundays would be spent drinking vast amounts of beer and doing assorted drugs while watching American football - and then we would all, totally wasted, watch 60 Minutes.

Strange to remember. It was and still is a really good show - but it seems strange.

You've never heard of "40 acres and a mule"?

That's why there should be a movie about the Reconstruction era.

You want divisive politics? That's where it is...

Jim Crowe laws, etc.

The Reconstruction era is really interesting if you feel like reading up on it.

As a result, a lot of slaves became sharecroppers and were essentially "hired" for paltry wages - near slavery with the label of freedom.

You'll get a good idea about the plight of the former slaves and some of the reasons for the poverty and lack of education that exists in their culture today.
