Is anyone at this forum not rooting for USA to win the World Cup?

It seems like it's in espn's best interest to ram this down our throats. It must be a big city thing, I know very few outside of posting boards who care.

I'm surprised by how big soccer is in Toronto. Montreal is very much like the US in that regard - there it's a fringe sport that is commentated by the sports networks' "B" teams, like darts, curling, Strongman competitions, etc.

Sports bars in Toronto all tune to soccer games during the day, and not just during big international tourneys.

Well common now. World Cup vs. meaningless regular season baseball.

FW you're an old grump.

I don't see anybody getting offended by golf (except me). What a joke of a thing that is.

I've always had a hard time understanding why USA soccer is so lame considering how much of it is played in the parks, soccer moms and all that jazz.

I was expecting a predictable Canadian coup! Mutiny!

It's the most hipster trendy thing out there. I've never seen the bars so packed. Same as 4 years ago.

I've never said that soccer was boring. I'm a bigger fan of the sport then most people. I just find that the fouls that lead to game changing 90% successful penalty shots is ridiculous.

So what to you want to see before a penalty kick is called? Someone getting karate kicked in the face and blood coming out of his ears? Or some defender diving to punch the ball with his hand? Then you will see 1 penalty kick every 100 games.

I don't really hate all the Portuguese as much as I was on about there. I lived in the midst of them for many years and believe you me, they are by and large extremely rude and anti-social people. If you are not one of them about 1 in 10 of them will talk to you. I worked backstage for a few years at their summer festival in Trinity Bellwoods park and by the end of the evening it is just a bunch of cro-mag looking construction workers wandering around looking to fight each other.

I have a few Portuguese friends from work that are nice but for the most part I am not impressed with that race. If you don't believe me Matty, take a trip down to College and Ossington and try to stick your head into one of the sports clubs or barber shops or fish shops and see how you get treated.

yeah, I think people are looking at it a little wrong. Its hard to get into the box with some control. Plus the net is very large. If you have control in the box you're very likely to score anyway, a penalty kick is not a big stretch.
In hockey often penalties are not punishment enough imo.

Soccer is getting rammed down our throats??

Or is ESPN covering a big soccer tournament that happens one month every four years?

That they just happen to own the rights to, so its over-the-top coverage.

I'm betting it, just not watching it. Thankfully the ESPN SEC channel hasn't started yet or they will sneak coverage of the WC on there.
