I''m just glad we have a thread with many responses that doesn't center around IAG's cat.

But to me the biggest problem with advertising is that it is a waste of energy and resources with negative consequences to culture and environment. This industry doesn't create anything, it is mostly propaganda machine designed to instill an artificial need.

I agree with this and while I don't believe advertising itself should be banned I believe there is too much of it.

I don't have solutions for anyone else, all I can do is develop strategies for myself to avoid it as much as possible.

The problem I have with advertising is credibility, if I'm interested in a product or service I prefer a referral from someone I know/trust. Home renovations and moving companies come to mind in particular. I tend to not trust or believe most of the claims in advertising (especially commercials aired on TV between 2AM -6AM).

Why don't you live in a coop? Disconnect from the Internet, don't buy the newspaper and don't get a TV. Everyone takes turns cooking meals, harvesting the garden and shit.

Voil, Renotopia. No advertising and only the most basic of needs are fulfilled. No fluff.

There's no reason why small communities in cooperation with other communities should have any less good things than a large state. Why do you feel the need to turn it into some hippie thing?

That's great except some communities care more than others and work harder to have/keep nicer things. Now what?

Example - Detroit and its suburbs.

I think Reno's message was lost in translation..

Cant speak for the guy but i believe this is what he's trying to say:
This is the element of marketing and PR that i find evil because the level of deception and manipulation that goes on behind the scenes is extremely misleading to the listener/viewer and a total misrepresentation of real facts...

If you guys dont agree then do as i did and eliminate advertising mediums from your life (television etc) and tell me your life is any worse off without it...

Reno - I'm still waiting for the list of the needs to the public that we are not marketing to.

Its not about marketing. Instead of.

idiotic question. There is plenty of poverty.

decent housing, medicine, food, education, available to everybody. It is not just the "bums" that are struggling in this country.
These things should be a priority.
Environment, stopping exploitation of workers here and abroad. Is it really necessary to list?
