Really depends on other things on your credit report.

I have one card on my cr for 13 years never use the card but don't want to cancel for the longevity

Be careful. I did that with one card..had not used it for a year or two, and they cancelled it unbeknownst to me.. I went to use it once at dinner, and it had been cancelled..no notification or anything. I would suggest using it periodically just to keep it active.

What do you think of his advice in blog?

Is it a scam?

I don't think it is a scam per se...The "scam" is really only the number of people who intend to pay off the balances each month after reaching the dollar level required for all the miles and don't. Usually geared toward younger or less disciplined credit users, they will make that money back on the interest very quickly at %21. If you don't or can't pay it off in full every month, it becomes like getting RFB in Vegas and losing tens of thousands on the table games.

Blitty what was your conclusion on this? I had no intention of ever using a credit card again, but got a couldn't turn down offer from Barclay's yesterday (40,000 miles or more if I spend $500 on it in 3 months...that's two domestic tickets on Frontier) ...Then I started looking and decided to get the Chase sapphire for the miles too. Seems like basically $700 or more in free money if I figure out a way to spend $3500 on cards in 3 months. That is going to be the tough part. Anyway, seemed like you had done a lot of research on the difference rewards cards.

I know Saulty said better off to use the cash back cards, but I couldn't find any cards giving %4 back for all purchases. I had been using my Amex only because you have to pay in full every month (for the most part,) but I really want to try to get the biggest bang for my buck...would be nice to have some free travel when I'm done here.

So I redeemed my rewards from the Barclays and Chase United Plus cards. The balance on those is currently zero and I put them in the drawer.

I got the Chase Sapphire a few weeks ago. Used that during the entire Rio trip. I have a few thousand left to go, so that is my primary card.

How much did you have to spend? I have to use $3000 over 3 months on that one. I should have waited til I used the $500 required on the Barclay's to apply. I have mostly used Amex in the last year to make sure I pay in full every month, but thinking of ditching that when it's up for renewal. Looks like the Sapphire has more value and they gave me a decent credit limit.

These online blogs like the one you posted got me all hyped up and excited yesterday, but it's probably like the coupon cutting...may become a pain to manage the different programs to get your best value. You travel/go out enough that putting $3000 on a card in a few months is probably not a big deal. I have no idea how I will do that. I guess I can buy gift cards if I run short. There will be fees, but still will come out ahead. I thought I could do a cash advance and then pay it off immediately, but they don't allow those or balance transfers towards the mileage bonus it appears (makes sense.)

Sapphire is $3000 in 3 months. I spent about $1000 in Rio. Just bought our airfare for wedding in STL. My gf is paying me cash, so that worked out well.

If all else fails buy stuff and resell on ebay or something.. :dunno:

Also you get double points for travel and dining.
