A notion I have heard repeatedly throughout my life:



We in western society do not treasure old people enough. They are revered in other societies and those societies are superior to us in that regard.

Old people have a lifetime of experience and can teach us so much. We should all make a special effort to learn from their gentle wisdom. It is something that is good for our culture and also you will be surprised how personally rewarding it is.



Okay.

Basically bullshit. In my experience, old people are far more likely to be closed-minded bundles of prejudices and peevishness and a lifetime of accumulated annoying mannerisms. They are more likely to lament shit that doesn't need lamenting and want respect without earning it.

Sure, there are some cool old people - but they were probably cool their whole life. They were probably just as fun to talk to when they were 29. Old people should be subject to the same rules as the rest of us. If you want respect and positive attention, get it by being enlightened and interesting.

As someone who is not all that far from being an old person, this is how I feel. If someone ever started trying to say I should be listened to simply because of my years I would tell the condescending bastard to go fok themself.

Also, what the fuck is with young people? I'm talking sports to this young guy at work. I'm talking about the great Canada Cup of 1984 with Team Canada being a melding of the legendary Islanders/Oilers dynasties. I'm talking about the famous Lemieux goal in the '87 Canada Cup. I'm talking about the years when I used to go to 40 Blue Jays games a year as they had that fascinating step-by-step evolution from an expansion team to a 2x World Series winner.

Suddenly I realize the reason the dude has so little to say about it is because he was not born for most of it. The concept of an Islanders dynasty is like a chapter from Lewis Carroll for him. He was a couple years old for those World Series victories - no memory of it.

The dude is an adult. He is, like, 5 inches taller than me.

What kind of shit is that?
 
I remember the 87 Canada Cup. Probably the greatest hockey I ever saw. That's how hockey should be played :hattip:

They didn't want to broadcast that either. The games were on some ch 56. When the final game went into overtime the chanal cut off. America hates international sports, unless they're winning.

I have the opposite attitude. They do televise a lot of the games up here and when I see them, Canada or not, I start thinking, 'Don't you have an episode of The Reporters or something you could be showing instead of this pointless dregfest?'
 
that's must be what they're thinking. And I wonder why. I mean I understand if a person doesn't want to watch sport in the first place. But how is it that a game between two cities (non of which are even birthplaces of the players) are more interesting to watch than an international event.
As a hockey fan I'd rather watch a game of Bulgaria vs Japan. I'm curious to see how they play over there, what the players are like etc. It's not like we see it everyday, unlike the city teams.
