Archie, this what I would do for 2013 whether they make a run or not at the playoffs this year! Blanton, Victorino, and Polanco all gone for 2013 saves 25.5 million! Contreras and Wigginton take off 5.5 mil! If somehow they could unload Kendrick that saves 4.5 mil but probably can't!
Say 31 mil off books!
Pence in arb gets probably 4-5 mil more in 2013! Lee gets 3.5 more! Pap gets 2 mil more! Kendrick 1.5 and Cooch Ruiz 1.5 Say 13 mil added and Hamels must get 25 mil (2012 was 15 mil)! HAMELS MUST BE SIGNED*!
Total added approx comes to 25 mil!
Doing the above means CF, LF, and 5th SP are needed! Roy, Lee, Hamels, and Worley gives you on paper very good 4! For what Kenrick will be paid will do as 5th SP! Combo of Roy, Lee, Hamels, Howard, Rollins, Pence, and Utley salary for 2013 at 136 mil so ......
...... LF and CF is where you must go cheap! Brown will be in LF and Mayberry in CF! Couple guys salary controlled who must come through! From what I've seen they can do it! Mayberry good defensively and should be better at the plate than he is! Brown can't be worst than Pierre in field and the guy can hit! More power in the lineup! 3B still open but shouldn't cost that much!
Freddy Gallvis is other positional guy in minors who Phils knew would take over for Rollins down the road but when pressed into action early showed he is ready! Even if .230-.240 hitter guy is a 10+ in the field at 2B and SS so 3B can be handled as well. Not saying he ia 3B starter but guy who gets enough bats in 2013 as ML level sub in at all 3 positions plus upgrades fielding! Hopefully not but could be playing a lot of 2B? Chase, please be healthy to play 80-100 games! Nix is a OF backup!
So position player wise Phils now have 9 players for 2013 signed! 3B must be added with another IF, OF, and C backup gives you 13 to go along with 12 man staff! SPs and Closer set so just need 6-7-8 inn guys to fill out roster!
Sounds like teams in the hunt want Victorino and Blanton! So depending how far out the Phils are in late July might just say trade these guys for some quality prospects! It's a seller's market and what if the Yanks lose another SP ....... Fat Joe might get us more?
