Diggin' was originally going to be the first song - it should be the first song and Ain't Lyin' should really be about 8th or 9th - in terms of the progression being described. I won't bore you with all the thinking that led to moving Ain't Lyin' up front.
Anyway Diggin' is a foundational piece. The album is an abstract representation of the journey of addictions and recovery - it starts with Diggin'. The composite character is burying himself with his behavior. No matter where he is or what he does or how impressive he might think he looks on the outside - inside, he is diggin' - and when he thinks he has sunk as low as he can go - he can always keep burying himself more. I have listened to many stories and it something I have heard over and over (as well as experienced myself). Just like a literal hole in the ground, there's no bottom - you can just keep diggin'.
And the raunchy grungy sound is supposed to represent the guts-ripped-out feeling that goes with that.
Now there is a double meaning which is why I decided it worked as a title for the whole journey. Diggin' also means diggin' into your psyche. Self-discovery. That's the big picture. It goes through the final, terrible night of self-torment, and into the first moment of clarity (I'm in the Universe) and the realization of possibly being useful to others and finally at the end being able to see beauty and smile. (Ain't Lyin' was originally meant to be towards the end since it's about the realization that, just because I've changed my habits, it doesn't necessarily mean the world is going to be all peaches and cream. Get used to it.)
Anyway, that's the idea.
