Compressors intended for inflating car and truck tires can provide so much air so quickly that you can damage a bicycle tire and perhaps even the rim.
Tips and Warnings
- Carry a portable tire pump with you on your rides in case you need a quick refresher to get home.
- Never fill your tires from the machine at the gas station. The air comes out too fast and can blow up your tires.
Funny you mention it. Because after a lifetime of bike riding and tire filling without ever an issue, there actually was one today. The gauge on the air machine was stuck. It would not go past 40 PSI - although the air kept pumping. Needed some WD40 or something.
I didn't realize it right away. I was standing there being guided by the gauge so I kept filling (I need 45 - 60 PSI) and it took awhile before I finally clued in that it wasn't going to go over 40 no matter what. I probably overfilled that first tire by quite a bit.
No big explosion or anything though.
