same as my brother, kid was born in baq and it turned out very cheap out of pocket for him
You have to acknowledge you being in a far better position than most. My dad looked into just forgoing insurance a few times recently, I don't know why but he decided to just keep forking it over. If people think we are fucked, look at what coverage costs when you are in your 60's but not yet eligible for medicare. They pay like $1,500 a month for the same bs I have with the huge deductible + out of pocket costs.
Even with the almost 75k i think my cancer cost. They increased my premium to $500 a month (for a solo 22 year old) for 5 years afterwards. They win every time. But, if you don't have the money, what else are you going to do.
I think my point is that there should be a simple answer.
Health care costs in the USA should be at the level where someone in your position could just chose to pay. I know you can now, but the costs are way more than they should be. Those tests I got done in the USA for my heart were 5x as much as here. And it was the same General Electric machine, and the doctor here went to school in the usa. (This is ignoring the fact that my insurance paid it all).
If you factor in the premiums, deductibles, and out of pocket expenses people are probably paying more per year than someone who hasn't have insurance and pays cash
Agreed. I've always thought that the government should create a loan service for health care expenditures. Garnish wages for outstanding loans. Not sure how they would handle terminal cases - take it out of estates maybe... The cost of insurance is probably the reason so many people don't have it and one of the reasons that insurance is so much is that people who can't afford it just skip the bill. I went to the hospital (last year?) for some pains I was having in my abdomen. The bill came to over $8000 for the tests that they ran (in a matter of a couple of hours). When I got the bill, the lady said that it would be $2300 or so since I was paying cash (versus insurance). I asked her why anyone would get insurance then. My whole bill was probably less than what I would have paid in deductible + co-pay. It's a fucked up system.

When I was having my cancer treatment ( i was young enough to still be on my dads insurance). So the insurance company up and leaves the state of colorado in the middle of the treatment. Legally they have to transfer us to someone else I guess. I was getting these radiation treatments every day for 21 days. So, the new company negs the bill, so the hospital sends to me this bill: It's one half page of paper. It says: Radiation treatments, $1,800 each x 21 ... then it leaves a space for my credit card number. i am a fucking college student. Called my dad and he got it worked out. But, it just reminded me how screwed up this shit it is.
None of the treatments I had were new ( they were all around 30+ years ago). It should have cost nothing to treat me.

Other countries have national healthcare systems that covers all citizens. Here in the US the healthcare provider is a for profit business and the CEO's job is not to cure patients bad raise the stock price and offer dividends to the stock holders.
