No, no one uses the term native Canadian. We would just use Native or First Nations or whatever. Injuns and eskimos.

But we are not big on that stuff. You don't hear Italian-Canadian or Asian-Canadian (etc.) either.

Definitely, we would not call the Canadian indigenous people Native Americans.

As an observer of American culture (sometimes more voluntarily than other times) I had not noted that Americans had taken to calling the whole hemisphere of aboriginals, Native Americans. I am curious: does it stop there or does it apply to parallel situations. i.e. - would some Americans refer to black Canadians as African-Americans?

I don't know for certain, but I believe the term originates from when this part of the globe was colloquially referred to as the "Americas." Wikipedia (for whatever that's worth) says, "The Oxford English Dictionary cites usage of the uncapitalized term "native American" in several publications reaching as far back as 1737, but it is unclear whether these texts refer to indigenous peoples or simply to persons born on American soil."

I wonder how many black Canadians are ancestors of American slaves who arrived there via the underground railroad.

Have you ever met someone - and you got to know them - and a relationship evolved - and over time you fell in love - but then you found out they were actually a spy for a foreign government who originally got close to you to keep an eye on you to watch for any covert activities hostile to their country - but then you found evidence they were forced into spying because the agency they were working for had some kind of leverage they were blackmailing them with - and you believed they developed real feelings for you - it certainly felt that way - but it's also possible you were misunderstanding the evidence and they really were just using you - but then they were killed by another agent who car-bombed them when that agent believed their operation had become compromised.

And then you went to the funeral.

Man, talk about your mixed feelings.

I think I am going to re-watch the movie Crash. Not the David Cronenberg Crash, the Paul Haggis one that won the Oscar. I have it sitting here.

I am wondering if it can possibly be as bad as I remember. I really disliked that movie - and then it won the Oscar and I was angry.

But I'm also thinking, maybe it wasn't that bad. Maybe I was just in a mood. They don't just give Oscars to complete shit.

But then I remembered about a zillion examples where they do.

It doesn't seem like a good foundation for sitting down and watching a movie but that's what I'm a-gonna do.

I wasn't impressed with it much either. I thought it was decent but not Oscar-worthy. I've only watched it once too though - many moons ago.

Yeah Crash is a pretty iffy sort of effort. I think I disliked it slightly less this time but still, there are some big problems.

It actually has some rather interesting and astute observations on racism, but it is all thrown together in such a contrived, heavy-handed bundle of concentrated blechhh. When you try too hard to do everything in the world, nothing gets done particularly well.

So I decided on a rating of 4.9 out of 10 - which would round off to 5 at imdb. Then I logged in to imdb and saw I already had it rated 5 from before. I always find that satisfying.

Not that I was angry Crash won Best Picture because I thought Brokeback Mountain, which was the betting favorite that year, should have won. No. I found Brokeback Mountain to be okay - better than Crash - but nothing to get excited about. It was a love story. I don't know why there was such a fuss about it. People acted like the idea of gay guys having a love story was some kind of revolution.

25 years prior, I might have agreed but 2004? Ehh, whatever. Decent movie though.

Trying to remember the other nominees. Lemme look it up . . .

Brokeback Mountain
Crash
Munich
Good Night and Good Luck
Capote

Hmmm. Decent movies but nothing really grabbing me. I would need to go off the grid and see what else came out that year. I would rank Crash 5th out of those.

I would rank Cronenberg's Crash above that Crash.
