Young hockey watchers would probably have a hard time believing you if you told them how common it once was for a winger to streak down his wing - and fire a shot from out there.

Like not just hoping for a tip in or rebound or lucky bounce in an ensuing scramble - trying to score. It would work sometimes too. He would score. With the shot. Happened often enough that they would keep trying it.

It was a thing. The trying-to-score shot from the wing.

Basically pointless in this day and age. Huge goalies with huge equipment. That kind of shot has no chance.

I believe it is past time to make the nets bigger.

wouldn't get an argument from me.
I would prefer they could find a way to change the rules to cut down on all the mucking and grinding, open up the game which would increase scoring chances. But they haven't been able to accomplish this for any sustained length of time.
At least you gotta figure, the bigger net isn't likely to shrink as the season progresses

Canada is a hella deep country hockey-wise. No two ways about that. Some great players out there who can't make the Olympic team.

It's a wonder we don't do consistently better at this dopey tournament but it probably comes back to the same effect that has us doing so poorly in bronze medal games over the years.

Playing for a consolation prize ---> meh.

It's the world championship. I don't think that even the Canadian players consider it a cancellation prize. I bet they're all thankful to be part of it. That team played well together and that's what it's about. That's the problem Russia has. Great players but no strategy no clue ever since country fell apart.

It is too bad the Nhl season goes so senselesly late. I'd say move wc but playing hockey wc in July seems ridiculous.

You are exactly wrong. Every one of them considers it a consolation prize and is only there because their primary goal ended in failure.

You are projecting your own feelings on it. You don't know Canadians and hockey.

They can call it a World Championships all they want but everyone knows it isn't. It's a challenge of the leftovers.
