I was very surprised at Ex Machina winning for special effects. They were announcing the nominees and I was really stopping to think about some of the amazing shit that I sometimes take for granted in movies these days.

The Revenant - wow. The Martian had some serious space shit in there. Mad Max was like a comic book but there was some really amazing stuff when you stop to think about it.

I haven't seen Star Wars but I feel safe in assuming there are some respectable special effects in it.

The only one that I was kinda meh about was Ex Machina. Kind of a one trick pony as far as effects, I figgered. Partially see-through girl - that was about it.

But that was your winna. :dunno:

What a fabulous looking room. I just watched Rocks opening(?) due to the supposed controversy. I'm mostly a fan of Chris Rock.
But making a joke about black grandmothers swinging from a tree, especially for a room of privileged, empty, white people is cringe worthy at best.
I pity these people, the audience I mean. They look sad to me. Overly made up faces, gathered in an overly extravagant looking room, to pat themselves on the back for accomplishing I'm not sure they know what :dunno:

There were no privileged blacks there? Ok.

You pity them? You figure they all want to trade places with you and me?

Do you believe yourself when you're typing that?

I don't figure they wanna trade places with me. I don't know what they want. They're probably excited about whatever it is that they're doing. Perhaps more to do with me than them.
The emotion I get from watching (just this little bit) is not good. Plastic faces, empty smiles, frailty, going through the motions...sad.

Every person there was privileged, so why call out the white people only?

What black movie got slighted? I rarely watch movies. To nominate a token black movie to keep them happy solves nothing, correct?

I have no idea. I think protesting the Oscars is a ridiculous concept. Blacks need to get over the significance of white power structures appreciating(?) them. Need to build their own institutions and make the good ol boy/girl network irrelevant. ...which they've done to some degree.
I say privileged whites in the sense that metaphorically(?) speaking, that's the class who's responsible for grandma hanging from a tree.

I figure that if a Russian or Jew went to current day Germany and made a joke about how our grandmothers were hanging from trees in 1941, (even if there are Russians or Jews in the crowd) I would wanna bury him.
