Black Mass (2015) - Ima just take a moment to talk about this.
It's not as bad as I was led to believe. A lot of people were really down on it - in fact in the middle of watching it, I was reading an article about the Toronto Film Festival which described it as one of the bombs of last year that the festival needs to rebound from.
But I thought it was decent. It had a couple of things I liked in particular.
First of all, organized crime figures are assholes. Like really. They will kill your mom if she is in the way of a hundred bucks. But they are so often painted in a sympathetic light in TV/movies. Whether it is Tony Soprano with those ducks, or Michael Corleone and his daddy issues. Al Capone is a freakin' folk hero.
But I liked that Whitey Bulger was a portrayed as a completely unsympathetic creepazoid psychopath. I also found how he used being a registered FBI informant to be a fresh angle.
Johnny Depp actually is a good actor. He does not just play idiotic Tim Burton creations. He can be a person. Good supporting cast too.
My only complaint was that you want Bulger to really suffer in the end but unfortunately, they just went with the true story - spoiler alert?? - he got tracked down and busted without incident and put away.
Anyway, it was not an all-timer but 7.1 out of 10.
