The Revenant (2015) - A few thoughts on this one.

First of all, as far as award season, Dicaprio seems the main subject. Will he finally win an acting Oscar? I still have a couple more candidates to see but I think maybe. I'm leaning yes. He's very good. Would they give it to Eddie Redmayne two years in a row? I'm thinking finally Dicaprio.

The movie itself will probably be in the Best Picture nominees. I see it as near but not at the top. Just guessing at this point. It is by the same guy who was behind Birdman last year, Alejandro Inarritu, which won the big prize. This is a better movie IMO but possibly not as user friendly. It's harsh and somewhat long and will probably seem dry to many.

Actually I'm not sure what to expect from voters on that. It's really good. I'm still digesting it but dayum. It might have my vote at this point.

What really blew me away were the special effects. I think special effects and I think of space travel or a superhero swinging by spiderwebs through the buildings of New York. This is all realism. There is a scene where a guy gets mauled by a bear that is just like - holy fok. How do they do that? There are all kinds of little details that you know can't be really happening but it is seamless.

I wonder if it will get nominated in that category. :dunno:

Very, very strong flick. Definitely has the feel of an Oscar winner for Dicaprio and the effects as well as a very strong story make it something you can't take your eyes off of. I see it's 2 h 36 m long and I usually don't make it through flicks that long but it kept me watching. 9.1 peanuts.

Bridge of Spies (2015) - I have a hard time putting my finger on what exactly bothers me about this movie. I guess it's all the usual Spielberg stuff. The golly-gee everyman Americanism. The impossibly neat little bows tied on things. The people who aren't people but devices. The supposed-to-be-cute-but-just-irritating phrase repetitions that you know are coming before they are said.

It's not a bad movie. It is extremely determined to be satisfying and I guess it is. Tom Hanks is a reliable actor. Mark Rylance is the main award guy I am aware of. Supporting Actor candidate. He's good.

Ex Machina (2015) - Well, Alicia Vikander is really something special. An all-time great face (and the rest of her is okay too.)

That aside, this is a decent movie. There are certain places that tales of Artificial Intelligence seemingly have to go - and it goes to them - which, to a seen-too-much curmudgeon like myself always feels a bit tedious - but overall, I found it to be above average for the genre.
