Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)

T'was aight I guess. A lot closer to the original movie(s), almost to a fault. It lacked brand new "wow" moments, more of a nostalgia piece than anything.

Saw it in 3D and the 3rd D was well used throughout. I recommend it if you're gonna go see it at the theater.

Last weekend's episode was the season 2 finale but a season 3 is planned.

I watched and will continue to watch. I find it okay. There were times when it was hanging by a thread for me but I feel like it picked up momentum as this season went along.

It is certainly not a typical show for these days. It moves so deliberately with the main plot. So much focus is on subtext.
 
Sicario - Good story about the ineffectual policies and enforcement of the drug war. Prohibition has never worked and continues to promote violence and organized crime. The cartels and enforcement agencies turned the southern border into a war zone with both crossing the lines of morality. 8.5 F0cks.
 
Brooklyn (2015) - A very moving and charming tale. Well done to my taste.

Actually I have to drop that a bit. 7.7 out of 10. There were a few problems with motivations that I was letting slide - I think mostly due to Saoirse Ronan's completely appealing performance - but upon further post-viewing digestion, yap.

Steve Jobs (2015) - Gotta say no.

Watching it, without knowing much about the true story, it all felt very contrived.

After doing a bit of investigating, it seems my impression was accurate. While Jobs can't defend or confirm anything, the other people portrayed indicate it is pretty much a work of fiction.

I am interested in Steve Jobs and his story of innovation and literally changing the world. That couldn't help but be part of it, and it really does grab me, but all the manufactured drama and dialogue that feels so unnatural, so written ---> in the end I feel more like I've watched a movie about Aaron Sorkin than Steve Jobs.

Also, Michael Fassbender is getting all kinds of buzz for awards season. I'm not feeling much of that. Good but nothing to get carried away about.

I finally figured out how to use my Google Chromecast to play local video off of my laptop. I always figured it was possible but just never checked it out. This is a game changer.

Im streaming Star Wars VI at the moment in preparation for a trip to see The Force Awakens.

Tis the season to illegally download awards season movies - and continuing in that spirit:


Room (2015) - Tons of buzz for this one. Brie Larson is getting nominated for all the acting awards available and an Oscar nom seems a lock. Possible Best Picture candidate too.

The 5 year old boy, Jacob Tremblay was amazing. I can think of many kids who have been nominated for - and in some cases won - major awards over the years - but I can't think of any child performance more convincing than this kid.

Anyway the movie is good. It's harrowing and it makes you feel a lot of feelings. It's well done.

I can't give it a full unconditional recommendation though. I'm a little hard-pressed to find any point to it other than, you know, shit sucks.

Thumbs up though. I am below the consensus for sure but I'm far from saying it's bad.

Spy (2015) - this one is nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Picture, Comedy or Musical category. I guess that's fair. No way it would be nominated for an Oscar type of overall Best Pic - but what the hell. It seems right at home there, side-by-side with Trainwreck.

It has some laughs. It also has a tendency to take a joke and retell it with only slight variations 15 times in a row - but that often goes with the territory. It is comparable to the Jump Street movies I would say. Ehh, maybe half a notch below. But it's okay.

Spotlight (2015) - Yap. This is the one. If this does not end up being my top movie of the year I am going to be one happy film buff because there is something I will really passionately love still waiting for me out there.

This is right in my wheelhouse. This is a movie I loved from the opening scene and savored every moment. I want to run away with and marry this film.

It's about two things. On the surface is about the uncovering of the pedophile scandal in the Catholic Church in Boston. Noice. But it's also about deep investigative journalism. It's about newshounds. Newshounds for a newspaper. I love newshounds. Newshounds have such a beloved spot in my psychology. I guess newshounds are on their way to becoming extinct. But this movie is set in 2001 and there were still newshounds.

It's not a perfect movie for me. I have a few little complaints. Some procedural stuff I could have used less of. Some context I would have liked added.

Carol (2015) - It is a story of taboo lesbian love in the 50's - and I was ready to get swept up or get angry or something - but there is an extreme lack of chemistry that left me shrugging as often as not.

Cate Blanchett is very good as always. She is getting nominated for everything. Rooney Mara is conspicuously weak. I disliked many decisions made by director Todd Haynes whose name I will view with increased suspicion going forward.

Kinda tedious. Low on the rewatchability continuum. Not a complete trainwreck by any means but thumbs down.
