Worth keeping in mind that this is Lars Von Trier and he is probably less focused on having appealing wankable sex as having very uncomfortable sex where he can congratulate himself for its artsiness.
Mulholland Drive (2001) - Took another look at this. I find it to be a very good movie that turns kind of goofy. I have read theories trying to reconcile the shift in gears that takes place - people want to make sense of it by saying the first part is someone's dream.
Unfortunately I buy that. Although it bore no particular resemblance to a dream, given what happens later, I suspect that was David Lynch's intention. Which is crappy IMO. I find dreams to be the ultimate lazy dramatic device. If I thought he was just being weird-for-the-sake-of-weird and it was just some fun artsy claptrap, I would like that better.
The dream thing, I find stupid.
But I don't really know. I haven't gone looking for any comments from Lynch.
But I enjoyed watching the movie for the most part. 7 out of 10. Could have been higher but plunged a bit as it wound down.
The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) - Best Picture Oscar Winner for that year defeating, among others, It's a Wonderful Life.
Good old movie. Weak title. Like so many movies of that era, the acting is very inconsistent. It has a few unintentional laugh-out-loud hammy moments , but what the hell. It also has Theresa Wright who was IMO the hottest piece of 1940's ass out there.
Nice story about men coming home from the war and trying to pick up the pieces in differing circumstances. Real life double amputee (i.e. hooks instead of hands) Harold Russell won the Supporting Actor Oscar. A lot of it seems downright cornball now but I suspect parts of it were edgy in its time.
