All is Lost (2013) - probably most notable for the mileage it was getting for Robert Redford during award season. However no nom when the Oscar slate was announced today so never mind.
It's okay for the most part. It is a one man tour-de-force kind of deal - nothing but Robert Redford - virtually no speaking. Just Robert Redford alone, in peril, at sea for an hour and fortyish.
I HATED the ending. It's one of those purposely ambiguous endings that artsy fartsy people love so much where you don't know what happened. There is no way to tell. Guess if you want. Doesn't matter. There is no answer.
Isn't that wonderful?
I give it a 6 out of 10. If not for the ending it might have been high enough - like 6.6 - to round up to 7 - but the ending just sucked. So 6.0 exactly.
As for the work by Redford who really was my first favorite movie star, it is very good for the most part. The nature of the character is not much emoting. The nature of the script is only a few lines of dialogue right at the very start where he is voice-overing a letter he is writing. Oddly, I found that speaking quite bad. It was weirdly, unnaturally delivered, I thought. I have to think they did it the way they did on purpose - but it didn't work for me. Don't know what to make of it.
Anyway very good job overall, old fella.
I also read after the fact some very convincing testimony about how retarded the situation was. I didn't know while I was watching but apparently some of the actions and omissions on the part of an experienced sailor were unforgivable for people with a clue. One of several comparisons that could be made to Gravity. But I didn't know while I was watching so I'll stick with 6.0
