Coming up on 3 months at this job. I'm supposed to finally have some kind of review - might be tomorrow.

Although from what I gather it's not a proper review. It's more this guy that I hardly know - in other words not a direct boss - asking me questions about training and stuff - and me more or less reviewing my experience.

Which is fine. Any communication is good. But I would really like to have a frank talk about, you know, are they happy with me? Are they questioning if maybe it's not going to work out? These are things I would like out in the open before I move from this nice building where I've happily lived for 15+ years with a barbecue on my balcony to some great unknown.

And of course also stuff like, do they see me doing what I'm doing for the long term, or might they want me to switch over to driving a picker, or getting into inventory control OR WHAT??? Those aren't things that make or break anything from my point of view but still, talk to me.

Throw me a bone, I'm saying.

Who me?

Well they are happy with what I have done. I am seen as perhaps being sharper and having more attention to detail than most people - which is why they put me in specialty packing.

The problem there - and why I have been so uncertain about how I'm doing - is I am not subject to the same measurements as everyone else. Everyone else in UPS packing either hits their 225 lines/day or they don't. That's the well-known standard. My numbers are lower - sometimes quite a bit lower - because I deal with a lot of crap specialty packing jobs every day - and I was told that my numbers don't matter - but in my head I wonder, okay, fine, but do they really not matter?

Long story short, starting Monday, I am going into the regular pipeline. I will just be doing normal packing and subject to the normal standard. So there will be something everyone can sink their teeth into as far as evaluating me.

So do they want me long-term? I would say yes - but with the condition that I hit production and also keep errors below the established number. I have been told that I will be scheduled for certification on a picker - which is the normal pipeline for guys once they show they can hit production for packing. But if I don't actually hit production - that would be a problem.

I feel sure I can do it. I have actually hit production from the specialty station - (once) - which is like playing with an arm tied behind your back - my error rate is good - so why wouldn't I?

But I have to actually do it.

So it's SINK OR SWIM!!!

Sink or swim Leo. Sink or swim.

Yap. With Ron Leibman and Valerie Perrine and that dude up there whose name I can't recall as Billy Pilgrim.

And they have the scene where young Billy's dad literally throws him in a swimming pool and it's sink or swim.

He sinks.

But he gets saved and the story goes on.

Vonnegut liked the movie as I recall. I think I recall him saying that Joe Heller - with whom Vonnegut was friendly - liked the Catch-22 movie and so the two of them were unusual (since authors almost always dislike the movies of their books.)
