This thread is the saddest thing I've seen on here in quite some time. It makes me lose hope

It's pretty amazing that you think anyone embarrassed themselves more than you embarrassed yourself in here, Cougar Bait. With the exception of encouraging local philanthropy, you put on a stunning demonstration of so much that's wrong with this society.

You assumed that you had won some argument that wasn't even an argument before you spoke one word, immediately dooming any chance of a conversation. You reduce everything to 3rd-grade level arguments that have no meaning in the real world. You create straw man arguments to turn every possible suggestion that doesn't agree with you into those simplistic, meaningless scenarios. Then you declare yourself the winner and devolve into name-calling and, what, I guess some bizarre, nostalgic romp into cold-war mentalities, because that was such a good time.

Amazing.

Yeah but in Renotopia a significant portion of the population would be able to do nothing. Yet somehow we would still enjoy the same level of technical progress. Cause some nerds would still be willing to work and make stuff.

And I really hope you're just tired from the baby, Matty, because I count on you for some level of meaningful conversation around here. You're doing all the same things Cougar is, only slightly more nuanced. Slightly.

Seriously, this is what you bring? You're unwilling to entertain that it might be an interesting conversation, that maybe technical innovation could be used more to reduce the grind of the average person, to produce more free time for everyone, instead of the focus on creating more work and inventing more markets? That maybe a change towards an easier life for everyone could provide enough incentive for more innovation?

Seriously, people, there is a huge middle where the whole world actually operates. All this divisive, bullshit thinking is a disgrace. I don't know anymore if it's human nature, and it's just become so much more noticeable because it's being broadcast constantly, or if something is causing people to behave this way more in recent times. Either way, it's depressing as hell.

I think CB & co. won in the end. I was a little disappointed in the debate.

You should be disappointed in the debate. The only argument that CB won is an argument that he invented, and he never had an opponent in it.

First, reno's points are as roughly sketched as anything you'll read on this site. He literally blurts out the tired old hippie-commie laundry list.

Second, what the fok is technical innovation doing right now, if not exactly that? We don't have to hunt, don't even have to cook if we don't want too. The average North American can currently live a perfectly meaningless, comfortable life without much skills.

I have an issue with extreme income inequality, but what reno is suggesting sounds even more soul-sucking than the current system.

Third, it's really hard to take either of you seriously when you armchair it from the comfort of your marginal, unproductive lifestyles.

Yes, tech innovation has done a lot in that direction. Enough that, for me, it's not hard to imagine a world in which tech has advanced to a point that the average person could have something like a 10 hour work week, and a wonderful amount of free time to pursue his passions and better his life.

But, I don't think anything like that happens with the current trends towards financial inequality.

You'll have to provide some solid evidence of how much more you contribute to society than I do, before I accept this as an argument to invalidate my opinions.

And I totally agree with you here. But from here to a widespread adoption of communist ideals, there is quite a step.

I help people find jobs. I take money from my employer to pay writers who give tips to others on how to find jobs.

(Sometimes I take a break and post on Gamelive.)

For the moment I'm going to concede that you contribute more to society, but I think that's a tricky thing to get a handle on.

But whatever, I'll concede it and move on to how that makes my opinions unworthy of consideration. So, if you found yourself in a conversation with, say, a full-time philanthropist, you would consider your own opinions to be of no consequence?

You see that because that's what you want to see instead of paying attention. Because I guess thats easy for you to attack. :choke:
I'm sorry I made you feel bad by attacking your self worth thats linked to your job :dunno: You can make yourself feel better by making a few more "commie" posters. What a twat.
