Wayne Gretzky joins growing call for angled NHL goalposts

Wayne Gretzky spoke out in favour of introducing angled goalposts into the NHL. Rather than the current rounded posts, which tend to deflect pucks away from the net, the posts with a flat surface angled inward, would increase the chances of post shots making it into the net.


Seems fine although wimpy to me. The proposal is clearly trying to appease the constipated, afraid-of-change crowd. Like, see? The outside dimension of the net is still the same. Everything is fine. There, there. Now, now.

I personally would just say fuck them. Change the posts and make the goals bigger. Decide what you want goals-per-game to be and adjust accordingly.

7.5 goals per game sounds good to me.

But yeah, it will probably have to happen in increments and Gretzky's voice is not without weight.

As of a few days ago, this season's average was 5.26.

I'm all for it. Scoring seemed to be increasing early in the season but no, we're back to the new low normal.

I dunno. Maybe I'm crazy to think fans would like more scoring. The NFL keeps monkeying around with stuff to increase scoring and no one watches that.
