i simply think many of y'all are living in some dream world. you want the government to provide you with health care, education, great job opportunities, roads to drive on, fire and police protection, etc, yet you don't think the same government has any rights to dictate how fast you should be driving on those roads or whether or not you wear a seat belt. no doubt when you were growing up, you expected your parents to feed you, clothe you, buy you all the latest and coolest gadget and toys, give you money to go to movies or concerts, and yet didn't feel you should have to obey your parents' rules.

BB, did you wear a seat belt when you were a youngin just starting out driving?

i know it was a requirement (not a law) when i took driver's ed to make sure that not only i had my belt on, but all the passengers in my driver's ed car had them on.

if you're asking have i worn a seat belt each and every time i've been in a car, the answer is no. the move to wear belts, at least by my memory, started to gain a foothold in the 60s. i do know that since feb 14, 1987, i've never driven without one on. that's the date i lost a brother-in-law to a traffic accident. he would have survived had he been wearing one himself.

the law is simply to protect us from ourselves. it's no different than requiring parents to safely secure their infants in autos with the kiddie seats. and yes, reno cool, some folks have made a shitpot full of money selling those infant seats. passing laws on issues that should be common sense is necessary since so many of us don't always exhibit common sense.

Yes BB, I wear one all the time too every since a friend from say 20 years back mentioned a relative died cause he wasn't wearing a seat belt! The friend never ever wore one but always did after that! The only belts that I disliked were the automatic ones locking you in!

Once they make peace mandatory, perhaps we'll allow seat belts. :dunno:

Seriously though. It sounds pretty low class technique for government to pretend they're motivated by my safety when in reality they're only motivated by the desires of their corporate friends and relatives.
I'm not sure that's what happening with seat belts. If you say they've had it since the 60's before car insurance was mandatory.

you're right, if their sole motivation is to line their pockets, then it's wrong. wish i had a magic wand to remove all corruption from the process. but even if some congressman pocketed loot to vote for legislation requiring car seats for infants and toddlers, it's impossible to deny the public good and service that has come from the law.

I was in a big traffic accident once. Was going through an intersection and got hit on the side making the car spin until it hit the median. Once it hit it, it started flipping upside down, at least 5 times probably more. I was in the passenger side and not wearing the belt. My recollection is that on the initial flip I went flying, and the driver who was wearing the seat belt caught me belly down from the waist and hug me, I was just hitting top and the bottom like a rag doll remember seeing dark and sunlight up and down. The passenger top corner absorbed the blunt force of the crash and ended up completely cave in to the seat. The rescuers said had I being wearing the seat belt I would have been dead. My buddy's back ended up mess up, the disc things got damage from all the tension, and minus a few cuts in the arm nothing happened to me. A fluke, I know, but not wearing the seat belt saved my life.

Now I don't celebrate birthdays, but this happened a day after mine the real one. So I can't help remember it and always take it as a lucky day. Un dia de suerte.

RJ, when's your BDay? Yes, just a fluke thing probably! More people die without the belt no doubt!

Then you have those occurances in accidents that people die in a fiery crash cause they couldn't unlock the seat belt to get out! The government feels that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few!

I wear my seatbelt, AND a motorcyle helmet when I drive.... sometimes I through a life vest on too...

I've been the victim of toooo many accidentals here...

I only wear the motorcycle helmet when I'm driving a convertible. And the lifejacket only when I drive over bridges. But my latest gadget is the ejection seat. I plan to use it when the car jumps off a cliff.

I always have a hunting knife under my seat. This is used for self defense primarily by it also can cut the seat belt after it saves my life from being ejected from the car, breaking by chest bones on the steering wheel or hitting by head on the windshield.

when I flipped my truck I wasnt wearing a seatbelt
flipped about 6 or 7 times is what the witnesses said
I never let go of the steering wheel, I had a deathgrip on it... it slammed me back and forth. front windshield busted out and flying shattered glass cut through my ear. remember having a mouthful of dirt once the truck stopped
screwed up some vertebrea and ligaments in 1 shoulder but walked away...

about a yr later was a passenger in a vehicle that flipped although not as violently as mine. we just flipped onto the roof and slid, wasnt wearing a seatbelt that time either. it just threw me onto the driver, no one was injured

still hardly ever wear a seatbelt unless I'm on an interstate
