I provide no fucking value, I'm a gambler. The richest people, speculators, bankers provide no fucking value. It's the people who actually do provide some value that are losing their incomes, houses that are protesting.

Agreed.

I'm not so sure who's protesting though. Seems to me that a bunch of them are aimless college students. These people have always existed. I think they just became more vocal.

And it seems to me that a lot of people lost their house because 1)they were silly enough to overextend themselves, thinking the market could only go up 2)bankers let them do just that when they decided to turn to high-risk gambling.

The inconvenient truth, for everyone screaming "jobs jobs jobs", is that there is a shortage of skilled labo(u)r in both Canada and the US. People aren't finding the jobs they want and employers aren't filling the roles they need. There is a big disconnect there. I don't know how you fix this fucked-up situation that's only gonna get worse as our population ages further.

The only thing I'm pretty sure of is that *everyone* is a fucking asshole.

I will probably go down there today actually. everybody has their part to play. Mine is not sleeping in the park.
You're implying that you have to either physically be there all day or you have to oppose the protest. That of course is untrue. I appreciate and support what they're doing, and in the right situation I may have a part to play. Right now my part is to lead this thread.

Gamblers have a problem with speculation. Unreal. Any 'investment' involves speculation. Speculators provide liquidity to the system.

Should the banks (with the deposits guaranteed/insured by the governments) be speculating ? No unless it's part of private asset management etc.

I thought of you today Reno. When I was downtown on a hunt for some Lego thing, I ran right into the Occupy Melbourne protest. When we were stopped at a light a girl came up to hand me a flyer and we chatted for a minute. She had no bloody clue what she was on about so I'm not sure why she was even out there but it was a good crowd from what I saw. Apparently it's going on across Australia today.

cool:up:

Went and walked around downtown last night. The protesters are now on the other side of the street. Cops have occupied the previous spot, and were hanging out watching the crowd across Broadway.

Lots of cars honking, waving showing support as they drive down the street. It was good to see

they're not trying to get morons elected, or anybody else. They stand on one easily agreeable principle I believe. The principle which is absent from mainstream political discourse to any substantive degree. Policy has to be maid to address the needs of the public. Stop feeding the rich with the excuse they somehow help everybody. Another words end "voodoo economics", as Bush sr called it.
