No reason to "hate on" the rich (nor the poor). Who here doesn't try to take as many tax breaks as they legally can? If you were rich, you'd do what you could to save on taxes also; it would be silly not to.

Yes, the tax code is broken, and the only way it's going to improve is by fixing campaign finance. But how? Virtually impossible to solve in a way that isn't unfair to someone.

How do they feed the poor in Canada?

We don't have a food stamp system. People in need get welfare also called social assistance, rates vary from province to province.

There are also food banks and soup kitchens.

One of the systems I've seen here in Windsor is a food co-op, where you pay a set amount (like $30 a month) and money pooled is used to buy items in bulk and divided equally among members.
Membership is restricted to low income earners ie welfare recipients, you need to apply and be approved.

I'm not even reading all the other replies.

I see nothing wrong with a poor person choosing organic foods. What's wrong with spices? what just because they are poor they should have flavorful food? I don't care if it is food stamps, they have the right to enjoy all the foods we do. Just because they are poor doesn't mean they shouldn't get to enjoy the same things. Now this all depends on the specific situation, but in general, for those who truly need it, I couldn't care less what they buy with it.

Hell the food co-op sounds good for any group of singles/small families who would take advantage of the cost savings of a place like Costco, but don't need 50 cans of tuna or 30 rolls of toilet paper at one time.

Not sure how anyone else on here eats, so I can't say whether I agree with that or not. Was curious so I looked it up: the national average SNAP benefit is $133.08 per person, per month (http://www.fns.usda.gov/pd/18SNAPavg$PP.htm). That equates to about $1.48 per person, per meal. Note that it does vary by state (so obviously a Hawaiian is going to receive more than a Minnesotan, due to higher food costs).

That is not extravagant but absolutely sufficient to eat a balanced diet. My wife and I spend about $180 per month on groceries (total). Granted, we do shop at Aldi (for most items), but one could still get in under that $133 / month level by buying generic brands at a regular grocery store, and not buying a lot of processed/pre-packaged foods. It's just flat out not true that it costs more to eat healthy foods. Anyone who has visited a produce section lately knows that there is a huge selection of fruits and vegetables available incredibly cheaply.

$1.48 per meal is sufficient?!?

Common!

LOL @ people bitching at other people who abuse $133 a month.
Considering I am able to eat a "normal" diet (grains, meats, dairy, fruits, vegetables) for $1.00 per meal, yes.

I'm not claiming anyone is abusing anything; I am simply saying the amount being given out (on average) is reasonable.

That number seems really low.....skewed by babies maybe? I know people getting wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more than that monthly. I had a friend in college who got like $500 a month.

For people who truly need it, it's great. It's why it's there. But I have seen numbers that indicate that %45 of all assistance is fraud of one kind or another. Some people take this food, barrel it up and send it to their relatives in other countries.

What about that Walmart deal where the ebt thing broke so certain Wal-Marts allowed them to still get their food without knowing how much money they had on their card... , but then everyone caught wind and people were piling up their carts, buying whatever they wanted, telling their friends to hurry and get over to Walmart to take advantage .

That's the kind of stuff that eats me up..more than the 100 calorie pre portioned cookies.

Oh, here's that article.
http://articles.latimes.com/1997-04-02/local/me-46234_1_welfare-fraud Teddy lives in California. Maybe that is why he is so passionate about this.

Tighten up eligibility requirements and give more money to the persons that really need it. Not ones like the woman in this article.

There is no way you can eat meat for $1 a meal.

Almost every fast food chain has a $1 menu....at Del Taco on Tuesdays you can get 3 shredded beef tacos for a buck, McDonalds has double cheeseburgers for a buck...Jack-in-the-box has chicken sandwiches for a buck.

Spend the buck only and drink water and that gives them 48 cents per meal to save for their drug habit

How do you feel about fast food, red bull, bloody mary and margarita mixes, pop, and potato chips? They are all Snap-eligible now. The whole deal should be scrapped and handled like the WIC Program.
