I found the post game reaction kind of funny. I know from past world cups and various international tourneys, if Italy/Portugal/Spain/Greece wins - same prolly with Brazil - I'm sure the same would apply if England won but ---> not happening . . . anyway there would be horn honking in my neighbourhood and people out on their balconies and flags and a bit of a ruckus for a few hours maybe more.

Yesterday nothing. About an hour after the game, in the distance I heard a little outbreak of meep-meep-meep - lasted for maybe 20 seconds - could tell by the varied tones that multiple cars were involved - couldn't say for a fact it was a Germany celebration but I believe in my heart it was.

And that was it.

I was idly wondering in the last day if Germans actually feel like they're not entitled to celebrate things due to Hitler residue. But then in my mind it was like, "Naw, that can't be right."

I brought up the topic with a German dude that works here (whose new nickname is Schweinshteiger) and he said in all seriousness that yes, that's a thing.

Oh, that's definitely a thing. I was just talking about that yesterday.

I'm basing this on a sample of less than a dozen German couchsurfers that I've hosted, so, grain of salt and all, but...

Yes, it is, apparently, sketchy to be German and appearing patriotic. Some serious cultural guilt, there.

Not just Germans, too. Europeans, in general, seem very wary of patriotism. That makes sense. I think being withing a generation or two of brutal wars on your soil should make you wary of patriotism.
