Then again, maybe people are just attracted to TV out of laziness and convenience. I don't see any evidence of evolution impacting the methods for which our brains approach certain societal situations. There have been civilizations of more than 100 people for thousands upon thousands of years. We've had modern TV for 60 years. Sorry, the math just doesn't add up. If you want to call it an escape like drugs or alcohol, that's suitable, but to call TV an evolutionary crutch is beyond absurd.

You're beyond absurd.

Boy o boy this really misses the point about anthropology by a wide berth. The subsequent bit about swingsets and video games, which is stated as if it is somehow related, doesn't tie to it all.

However there is no doubt that people sometimes act out of laziness. Lots of stuff going on with humans.

What exactly is the point about anthropology? Our brains work through conditioning. They are not hard-wired by previous conditions. There is a reason that Vonnegut flunked out of anthropology.

Feel free to point out any inaccuracies, Monkey.

I just bought some ice climbing gear. I hope to start using it this winter in NH. I have the bad habit of picking of a new hobby, buying the equipment, and then moving on to something else. The only 2 that I keep coming back to are hockey and surfing. I have gone though phases of cycling, fly fishing, kayaking, and skiing. Must of the shit just sits in my Moms garage.

I am actually thinking of taking flying lessons in the Spring. Anyone here ever try flying?

on days that I work, I come home and sit on my ass... last thing I want or need to do after busting my ass all day is a hobby or chores around the house.
only TV I watch is sports, all the other shit doesnt hold my attention except for a few shows on Discovery or A&E.
used to do alot of fishing but havent done much the past yr or so.
taking care/playing with kids takes up 80% of my free time.

days that I dont work I either piss the day away or search for more work. the latter usually means pissing the day away anyway.

I will admit it does look cool sitting there, but I feel like a d-bag when girls ask me if I play it.

I told a girl a 2 weeks ago, when she asked if I played, that it was the last gift I got from my Grandfather before he passed away, that he wanted to teach me, but got sick before he could. She ate that shit up. Try it Blitty.

The first thing I want to point out is that it's pretty assholeish behavior to ask a question, and then when someone puts effort into a serious response, to call it "beyond absurd." I keep holding out hope that you're not an asshole, because we have a lot in common and I've enjoyed your company in person. But, I don't know if I can hold out hope much longer.

What math doesn't hold up, exactly. Do you think that maybe before TV, there were other "crutches" to help deal with modern society. Is that idea beyond absurd?

Do children forgo playing on swingsets and in sandboxes for video games because of evolutionary hard wiring? Are they scared to go outside now? C'mon.

I think they play video games because they are more stimulating to the brain on a base level. I fail to see what this has to do with the rest of the argument.

Our brains cannot be conditioned to thrive under any and all circumstances. You know this. We have certain underlying social needs to function well.
