I don't have time for many hobbies. I realize that I watch quite a bit of tv but in the winter int he northeast, what am I supposed to do? I have my motorcycles and then during the summer I have a few other things such as playing golf but even that to me seems like a waste of an entire day. I can't justify sitting out on a golf course for 4 or 5 hours when there are so many other things I could be getting done around the house.

MonkeyFocker, you title ask if Americans have hobbies still but the crux of your commentary revolves around watching too much television. I think it is fair to suggest that many of us do in fact watch far too much TV but that doesn’t mean we don’t have hobbies as well. During the week I watch TV at night after work and yes I watch too much but on the weekends I participate in my hobby which is golf.

A hobby gives us break from the norm, things such as TV and the computer have become the norm for many Americans.

+110 % agree with MF! Want ever makes the kiddies happy. Just can't reply with any of my normally very educational and useful input on these shows cause I haven't seen any of them. Is popcorn you main snack while watching these shows?

I go to the gym 3-4 times a week after work. On Thursdays I have softball and on Sundays I have soccer. If there is any time left I have to do the chores in the house like mowing the lawn, raking leaves, fixing the fence or pruning the trees. I also have to water the plants and veggies in the Summer. Other than that if there is any time left I play with the kids before they go to bed and play some poker or watch a game on TV. Haven't watched a movie or sitcom for 3-4 years now. If I had to start a hobby it will be how to make handmade sweaters and quilts.

When you are not registered to vote it doesn't matter what you are Mr.Monkey. Never voted in my life. I'm a strong believer that one vote doesn't count when millions vote.

Pavy, we are registered just haven't voted much of late. Yes, it does appear futile even though you hear the rhetoric that "every vote counts."

This question of TV versus hobbies is an odd one to me. To my way of thinking, TV is a hobby. I don't see anything wrong with it. A lot of the most popular stuff on TV is not of interest to me but I'm sure my hobbies are of no interest to many other people. Different strokes.

And an important point: there is some very good, entertaining stuff on TV. TV by no means has to be mind-numbing. I find it relaxing, entertaining, educational. Those things are important.

In terms of time spent at it, TV is my main hobby. I don't like the sound of that but there it is. I watch well under the 4 hours/day that was referenced but still, if I think about how much further along I would be with music if I shifted all my TV time to it, I could make myself crazy.

But it's okay. I work hard and get my exercise and the music is like a form of work in a way. It is okay for an old dude like me to have some time reclining and relaxing. I don't always have to be pushing and striving for something.

But then again, I'm not American. :canada:
