Now wait a minute. The cashier needs the PLU code. Sure they have a chart but trust me you would be paying the price time wise when you were in line and had a new cashier who had to look at the chart for each type of produce you had.

Maybe fuck cashiers who don't know all their codes, idk

NO. Because every piece of fruit doesn't have the bloody sticker. So wtf's the point? What if I buy 4 oranges with no sticker?

And the other thing I thought of after reading tully's post: Does the US even have more than one type of kiwi? Because I don't remember them. Here we have a few so I could maybe make a case for why they need stickers. But I only remember the fuzzy brown ones with green insides there. You shouldn't need a sticker for a friggin kiwi fruit.

On a different note, my friend invented a kiwi spoon/knife thing that's now sold to many Aussie and Euro grocery stores. One end cuts the kiwi, the other end lets you scoop it out. Made a great amount of money from a stupid ass piece of plastic.

YES.

The fruit without the sticker is in error, and merely an exception. There are exceptions to every rule, but on the whole the stickers are necessary to avoid time spent in line for the masses.

In the future maybe they will have a way to scan every piece of fruit. Obviously weighed items would still be different.

The point is I am right and you are wrong on this one Oksana.

Unless things have changed since I lived there, when I buy 6 apples, 6 apples don't have a sticker. I could very easily buy 6 unstickered pieces of macintosh goodness.

If a checkout chick doesn't know what a granny smith is, she should probably find a new place to work.

The stickers contain the "PLU" which is a 4 digit code the cashier types in in order to tell the register what is being rung up, say "4 quantity 4023 (oranges)" or "4011" (bananas) or 4016 (red delicious apples) or 4028 (potatos) or 4051 (asparagus). The more items the stickers are on the better and I also dont' agree on the checkout chick it's probably some 17 year old high school chick who has other priorities of things to retain (chemistry, social studies, boys) than apple varieties.

Yes but what do they do when they're encountered with fruit with no stickers? They go to the "apple" page and play a simple matchy matchy game with what's in their hand and what picture they see on the touchscreen. Point and click.

It really is an antiquated system and other than for random fruits or vegetables ie turnips, asian pears, etc... (and then every piece should be stickered) you should know what the f you're looking at or at least what screen you should go to play the matching game, no? it's not rocket science. seriously. why aren't chili peppers stickered? there are like 30 different kinds. the reason they don't need stickers is because they go to the picture page and sort it out. :)

Then you would be waiting for them to find the right picture screen. The point is that for every type of chili pepper there is a different code, because they are priced differently for very deep and complex socioeconomic issues I"m not going into in this thread.

The point is, done correctly - one sticker on every item and less waiting for us as the consumers. Anything else is shit.

They can't get people to grasp the <15 items cash only line. I can't imagine the disaster that the self thing would be.

Oh they can't do neither here as well. In fact at my local grocery, the manager has started a collection jar for the Breast Cancer Network behind the smokes counter for when you want to donate money because you know you ripped them off on self service. Every Wednesday I give them $20 without fail because I get so frustrated that I just start punching in random shit. And talking back to the automated voice. Oh and I put milk in the bottom of Seth's pram and forget it's there and then walk out with it.

So I figure $20 a week covers it and the guy's at least being good natured about it. Still beats waiting in a 35 person express line though when some people have 26 items and others are paying with a combo of card, coin and plea bargains. Fok that.
