I have been called by plommer many times as a butt fukker and never thought of it as racist. I thought of it more as a joke.

Pavy, if ur talking about a non asian person then yes that phrase is acceptable. Do i really have to explain how to apply commonsense here mate??

Guys, lets perform a little social experiment. Next time ur out stop a asian person and ask em if the phrase 'chink in the armour', specifically being associated with a asian person is racist.

The expression on their face should provide you with all the answer you need...Damn those cultural idiosynchrosies...

I don't think it's racist. It's an expression. Racism is when you discriminate because of race. Like when blacks had to pee in different restrooms than the whites. Do Asians ever had to pee in different restrooms than whites?
 
I don't think saying "see what happens if you say it to the average person on the street" is proof of what you want to say

people are generally stupid and get offended easily, so yes, if I said a lot of things to people on the street they'd get offended

North America has not been kind to the Chinese - in some states they weren't even allowed to own land until the late sixties. I think the difference is they're a bit less vocal and/or history books don't care to cover a lot of their stuff.

And yes xpy, that wouldn't fly here. I just got off the phone with an American and we were talking about this for a bit. The stuff he assumed are fun representations of Chinese culture, simply aren't (I also didn't know this until I moved down here). Egg rolls, fortune cookies and that shit doesn't exist in their culture. I actually looked yesterday when I was in the grocery store at the fortune cookies because of a thread on SBR. The box of fortune cookies: Imported from Cerritos, California. :lmao:

I agree that sometimes people get a bit too PC but in this case, I used to work as an editor... not only did this make it onto the website, someone loaded this onto the autocue for the announcer to say. Several people saw this before it went out. If not the first time, then the second. Someone along the line should've picked up on this - whether they believed it to be offensive or not, you need to be culturally aware when your job involves broadcasting info to millions of people. Sucks they lost their job but people lose them these days for much less.

And you rock up and my boyfriend is Chinese and your wife is Black, I'm not going to say the word niggardly - which seriously, no one says in daily life other than a couple of posters trying to be cutesy - and you're not going to talk about Chinese people eating cats or dogs.

Maybe people make those jokes after knowing each other for a long time? Not sure as that's not my thing... but an international broadcast channel should be smarter than that - especially when stuff has filters to get past. I could understand a friend saying that to another, or a redneck not even getting why someone else would be a bit offended - but ESPN and the like should know how it might be perceived. Why even give anyone the chance to be offended? So many other phrases you can use... no need for this.

100% and if I hadn't have moved down here, I'd never have known the difference. But that shit is all fake. Just entrepreneurs playing into us Westerners which is fair enough because we buy into it. Which is why although I thought the fortune cookie reference was a bit distasteful, considering Chinese immigrants in N. America actually will perpetuate that to make the whiteys feel happy, I couldn't get too riled up. It was just lazy journalism. That chink reference though was pretty foul.

Monday was my day. Had final mediation (didn't know it was going to happen but still did it) and then judge came back and signed off. Have to wait for passport... normally 2wks for a kid but they said it'd be a bit longer just so Immi could get court papers straight but it's all done. Still going to take me a month or two. Need to pull my super, say bye to everyone properly, donate/sell stuff, etc. Plus I'm tripping a bit. It's one thing to say I want to leave... it's another to do it. With a kid. On my own (no work sorting it all out like every other country move). So I'd say maybe April? May give me hives soon lol
