Pirates Trade AAAA superstar John Bowker to the Phillies..

lefty pop off the bench.

never seems to get a chance, but usually rakes at AAA

could turn out real nice for the Phils.... Bowker also got a ring with the Giants last year.... going for 2 in a row!!!

What are the Pirates getting for him? And why did the Phillies want him? He's an awesome AAA player but he has the equivalent of a season's worth of PA over his MLB career and there is not a lot to like. Having said that he's a left handed outfielder that is an upgrade on Raul Ibanez, but there aren't many players in baseball who wouldn't be an upgrade on Ibanez.

I'm sure they'll just get some cash

Its more a THANK YOU move by the Pirates organization and to JB give a still not tooooo old kid get another shot elsewhere...

adding up a season's worth of AB's strewn about 2-4 years doesn't mean much

but try looking at his career MLB pinch hitting stats. maybe the Phils like his "clutch" bat-----(i'm not saying clutch is a thing, but maybe the phillies like his ability to come in cold off the bench)

also severe platoon splits. So they'd only use him in situations (righty fb pitchers) that he'd be likely to succeed in

I think he will be with the team on the 40 man, and an emergency replacement for the playoff roster which gets set Sept 1.

When you discount a season's worth of ABs as a small sample size of true ability (which is correct, but that's all we have to look at with Bowker) then clutch ability in general and then clutch ability in pinch hit situations makes drawing any meaningful conclusions pretty close to zero (and that's even assuming that clutch ability actually exists).

It's still an odd move, although we don't know what the Phillies gave up, but if Bowker takes any playing time from Ibanez then it's a win-win situation for the Phillies.

Polo, Raul is way past whatever he had but guy had 3 hits with HR tonight! Off and on this year for sure!

This guy won't be taking over for Raul! I think all their looking for is a LH bat in pinch hitting situations for the playoffs!

Gload has had some kind of nagging injury all year which has limited him to just generate singles with no power! If Bowker looks good as a PH will probably take Gload's place, if not then he won't be on playoff roster!

i'm saying a bunch of small samples all added up together.... don't equal a "bonified" larger sample size....

550 ab's spread out of 5 years of up and down from triple A.... a few here, a few there, spot starts, pinch hits is ALOT harder than a real full season with 1550-162 games

no doubt Pinch Hitting is harder

I don't believe in clutch really..... I do believe pinch hitting is harder and that stats bear this out..... I do think some guys are better mentally wired to Pinch Hit (matt stairs, jon vander wal)

well other guys need to be starting regularly to hit well.

Phils at worse will give up a couple hundo grand (100-k-300k)

or some PTBNL minor league roster fodder to be filled when the Pirates just need an extra arm or position player to fill in for hurt prospects..

again the move was made out of kindness and respect to Bowker... i'm sure the Pirates told me he didn't fit into their plans, and they would try to get him an opportunity somewhere, where he wasn't blocked by 10 prospects.

it can only be a win for the phils.... very little downside...

I hope he gets the start today

I think this could turn into a feel good story

So he is more of a OF right! Archie, really think with Gload not being able to play the field just bout anyway and can't run Bowker could be valuable to to them if he PH well in Sept!

Feel good stories are so cool! Always root for them myself!

Remember Chris Coste! Became my main man on the Phils for couple years!

Now I have Wilson Valdez to cheer on!
