I guess if you're the Yankees you can give a guy 90 mil in the hopes he pitches... one good game in October.

LOL! Funny but true! If George Sr was around he would say it was worth it! Guy was never satisfied unless they won it all!

Funny story Fiver! Sparky Lyle, an old relief pitcher for the Yankees lives in the area since he retired! See him in the local supermarket 3-4 times a year and just say hi! Seems a little surprised cause mostly everyone doesn't know who he is! Looks like a regular 70 year old guy!

Well years ago maybe a day after the yankees won the WS I see him in there and I asked him how long George will be happy with the WS title! He just smiles and laughs and says "about a week"!

Cool story. I feel bad for these guys who made peanuts back then. I hope his MLB pension is at least half decent. If I was a modern day major leaguer I would push for pension reform for the older guys. I know it's bad in the NFL. Those old guys are poor with broken down bodies and minds.

Jello taking a beating in this thread boys.

Mr.Monkey, calm down. PHI has only dominated one game in this series. I'd be very scared about playing any one of DET/NYY/TEX, little buddy.

Don't see where Jello is taking a beating here, that is until you brought it back up!

Dafty, I am very calm! I went into this year's postseason saying let the chips fall where they will! I have not cursed at all during any of the games! I'm proud of myself and I believe Fiver's quality posting of late in a calm manner has had a big influence on me!

By the way, i believe RayRay thought you were the bad guy from the vid you did proclaiming, yea, I know, I'm the bad guy, somebody has to be! I would go back to show you but it's probably been erased! Dafty, why do you do that?

How do we feel about Ibanez now? doesn't he get like 10+ mil?

along with fat Joe Blanton?

Blanton and Raul are not far from AJ and Carl territory

thats a VERY good point, I'd never really thought to much about players today leveraging their power to do something for those that paved the way for their mansions and vehicles....

I know there are groups for the NFL retired players, that Ditka is very active in... don't know about MLB though...

but yeah, that's an awesome thought. These guys are sometimes making literally millions of dollars per HR or more, or per pitching win...

meanwhile before free agency (and even after) the players were playing for peanuts, having to have a job in the off-season ect...

I just read the other day, how the Pirates offered Ralph Kiner 50% less of a contract after he led the league in HR's and was near the top in MVP voting.... because they were dead last... the GM said, we came in last with him and we can come in last without him.

Kiner had no other option but to sign it...

Also, I agree w/ Archie.

Why not spend?

Do you know how fucking annoying it is when Braves fans tell me that the Marlins "bought" their rings in 97' and 03'

NO FUCKING SHIT SHERLOCK! Who doesn't "buy" rings.

The Braves. Of course they only have ONE so...

Everybody on that '95 roster was either home grown or acquired through trades...EXCEPT Greg Maddux. Maddux was the last top tier free agent the Braves have signed and that was almost 20 years ago.

Javy Lopez, Chipper Jones, Jeff Blauser, Mark Lemke, David Justice, Ryan Klesko, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Steve Avery, Jason Schmidt, Kent Mercker, Mike Stanton, Mark Wholers, Steve Bedrosian, Pedro Borbon, Greg McMichael.... ALL made their major league debuts with the Braves.

The only players of any significance on their championship team that weren't former Braves farmhands were Fred McGriff, Marquis Grissom, and Maddux. McGriff came over in a trade deadline deal with SD in 1993. Grissom was traded from the Expos to the Braves just before the 1995 season.

Oh and Maddux was acquired through free agency after the 1992 season. 1995 was his 3rd of what would be an 11 year stint in Atlanta.

Oh yeah, and you've got a LOT of fucking nerve bringing up 1997 around me pal.

I'm still fuming over that fat ass Eric Gregg and his ridiculous stikezone for Livan.

Let's do a comparison of the Braves payroll and the Marlins payroll from 1993-2011 (I realize this discussion will go nowhere)
