Dave, so it wasn’t inspiration but rather imitation? Ever hear that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”? Maybe it’s semantics but I think your justification just proves my point.
Technically, that line is used to address when someone imitates another in the way they go about doing things, etc, it doesn't really apply to parody. If I start wearing certain clothes because I want to be cool like Justin Timberlake, I'm imitating him. When South Park rips Glenn Beck a new asshole, they aren't imitating him in the sincerest form of flattery, they are just making fun of him. My underlying point in making those videos was kind of to show how easy it is to do what JJ does.
So this thread isn’t about JJ, that’s cool. It is about an asshat at another forum you are a part of. Well what does that poster and the likes of JJ have in common? They both draw your ire. They both create a buzz around themselves, some good and some bad but most everyone acknowledges them in one way or another. Even the most notorious ignore user in forumville , none other than Mudcat knows of and who JJ is.
If these posters like JJ or your asshat guy weren’t so proficient as what they do no-one would notice and certainly no-one would make a thread about their distaste for them or the understanding as to how some could find them so appealing.
Again, you are beating to death a point that's already been made and never refuted multiple times in this thread; JJ and his type are polarizing. We know, I get it. The thing is, you overestimate how much I give a shit about them. They specifically don't "draw my ire", they are very easy to ignore and forget. I don't think about JJ at all on a day to day basis, and have never visited SBR to "see what he's up to". I don't care at all. What "draws my ire" is how many people follow these idiots like drones. This isn't just a forum thing. There are plenty of fucking morons on TV that people swear by, too. I'm irked that morons are rewarded with fanfare by the general public, not by the morons themselves.
I also argue the semantics portion with you as well. You say it was imitation but I say it was inspiration. Regardless of who you have made videos imitating it is irrefutable that you were inspired by them in order to imitate them. You wouldn’t make a video poking fun of someone like me cause I am irrelevant and very few would get what you were doing. Therefore I wouldn’t inspire you to imitate me.
I like to entertain and make people laugh. In order to do that, I have to play to my audience. Depending on what company I'm in, I will do my best to adjust my focuses accordingly.
Sure, I could have done a Barack Obama parody instead, but that wouldn't resonate with the SBR community. ONCE AGAIN, IRREFUTABLY, JJ IS THE FACE OF SBR. Therefore, to make a funny video for the SBR community, it's a logical choice.
I mean fine, if we want to beat around with the semantics, by definition I was "inspired" by him, since I obviously couldn't have made that video if he didn't exist. But you seem to be using the word inspiration as if it "inspired me to do great things". No, I just saw some asshat that got a ton of attention, and made a satire of him.
My original response might have misinterpreted the word "inspiration". If you were simply pointing out that he was well-known enough to be a topic for one of my videos, then yeah. Duh.
