It is just like what they did here, almost all for show. When Uribe became president they sent the army in (with help from the paras) to comuna 13 to retake control and drive the farc and whoever else out of there. They had all the auc leaders in jail in Itagui and don berna ran the crime in the city from his cell. He said no killings and the murder rate drops to 30/100,000 people and the government takes all the credit.

Then Uribe (who is now going to try to get back in power in 2014) betrays all the AUC guys and extradites them in the middle of the night and the oficina breaks into groups and the murder rate triples in 2 years and those communas are very dangerous again despite the new shiny libraries they built.

I was kind of surprised at how little I could see of the favelas from most places in rio, I was under the understanding they would be right there towering above the city. Here you can see some sort of very poor neighborhood across the valley from pretty much any nice part of the city.

That Rocinha is the closes one most tourist gets to. There are(were) even tour guides taking them through the main street of it. It was the most comical thing to see.

ha- if you see where I'm at right now it looks kind of like that, around 7 x 3 streets of good neighborhood surrounded by muddy shitty neighborhoods including a mercado that's a cradle for crime.

If you see the map of Rio, the Jardim Botanico neighborhood is one of the nicest one in all the city but if you keep going all of a sudden you get to a favela and it's a dead end against the mountain. A minute you're cool and then oh shit lol.

there are some pretty sweet views of medellin (not rio by any means but nice view) from the poor neighborhoods that surround the city.

thanks wheng! surgery went great. they inserted 4 pins into my last two fingers and wrist, which i had dislocated. They didn't have to make larger incisions to get my bones back in place, which is great news.

I just hope I don't run out of pain meds, as it was a bitch last night when my hospital nerve block ran out..
