The general lack of understanding in the world of the structure of logic bothers me. An example relating to baseball:

Dude on the radio is attempting to make an argument about why they shouldn't have the all star game decide home field advantage for the world series.

His case: in the ASG last year, Verlander gave up 5 (?) runs in the first inning. Verlander claimed that he wasn't trying to be competitive but to see if he could throw 100 mph for the fans.

Okay. That's not an argument against home field advantage being decided by the ASG. That's an argument that Verlander is stupid.

If you want to argue against the homefield thing, start again.

Whether the All-Star game should decide homefield for the World Series can be debated. I know many arguments for/against many positions. I myself am okay with whatever. The debate just puts my feet to sleep.

But the fact is, as of this moment, the ASG does decide homefield - so any player who thinks he has a shot at getting there that isn't trying to win is stupid.

Without question on the side of no way Puig should have made the team! Freeman day-in day-out working his butt off! If Puig made it you could say Ramirez deserved to go! Same games and HRs as Puig but more RBIs and better OPS with 29 less AB! He's a punk in my book already after brushing off Luis Gonzalez!

Home field for WS to who has the better inter league does sound like the best way to go about it!

Why do AS reps from the Cubs, WS, Miami, Houston, and other bad teams who are on the team just because they have to be represented, care about HFA for their league? They don't. If the starters cared so much about it, they wouldn't beg to leave after an at-bat either. Its all about marketing themselves, and Selig/Fox Network tried to change that and failed.

Yeah that has very, very little to do with the post you are quoting. My point was about the structure of logic. The fact that the example touched on baseball was incidental.

You are actually talking about the incidental bit as a primary topic. Which is fine. It just, as I say, has nothing to do with the post you quoted.

I shouldn't have put it in this thread. If I had given it more thought, I wouldn't have.

I certainly wish you all the best in getting whatever rule you would like for World Series homefield. It does not matter to me.

He's arguing that the home field advantage rule is no stronger motivation to win the game for players using Verlander as an example. I don't see the logical fallacy.

Here's another Charlie Manual in-game decision from yesterday! Bottom of the 8th score tied 4-4! Looking for a way to get 1 run lead into the 9th!

One out, man on 1st! LH relief guy named Veal comes in to face Dom Brown! Phil's analyst states guy has 9 BB in 7 innings of work! Brown takes 3 balls and analyst says take sign in order! Brown of course swings at ball four and next pitch makes out!

If Charlie gave take sign, runner now in scoring position and good hitters coming up with one out instead of 2 outs and guy on 1st! This is what has gone on since Manual arrived as manager but now without the great hitters who covered up his lack of MANAGING, the Phils don't still win these games!

I guess they have that too in Cincy with Dusty Baker from what I read! Oh well!
