I decided recently that I am too uninformed so I would make it part of my weekday routine to watch a TV news show.

And after about a week and a half, here is my first report: the news sucks.

I don't mean that the events in the world suck - although they often do - I mean the news presentations I have tried so far suck.

Like HUGE.

Yes what's called News today is total garbage.
Headline News has somehow turned into the Nancy Grace child abduction network.
There are good news programs out there such as Democracy Now among others but you wont find them on the major networks.

Lemme run something by you plommer (or any Canadians who fee like chiming in).

On the CBC national news today they are still going on about the shooting in Arizona. I'm not saying that was trivial but it happened several days ago in a foreign country. I could see having a little update but every day this week they have opened the news show with a live feed from a hospital press conferences for 10-15 minutes. Yep, the shooting victims are still recovering in a hospital.

That's the top news story in the world?

Is it just me or is that ridiculous news coverage?

Redonkuless news as far as I'm concerned.

The flooding in Australia should be top world news, not some dumb American politician bitch from AZ.

I believe the coverage of the shooting is going to turn to the subject of gun control.

I got some news for ya Muddy. I'm watching Frozen on Netflix right now and get this, IT SUCKS!

Not that I didn't expect an entire movie based on 3 friends getting stuck on an abandoned ski lift not to suck but it sucks more than I thought it could possibly suck.

Blame it on Stephen Harper Muddy. It's all his fault.

You know, if they wanted to talk about gun control, that would help. Talk about who the shooter is and what was going on with him and what is likely to happen. Talk about the ridiculous political climate in the US and if it is leading to increasing violence. Cite examples perhaps.

But all they do is go to these daily press conferences where various people say they appreciate various outpourings of support, and then doctors speak evasively about the slow progress of the victims. 10-15 minutes, they stay with it.

Sorry but it's fokking ridiculous.

I'm not just watching the CBC - I am flipping over to CTV too. I have a whole different set of complaints about them but I'll spare you (for now).

Canadian TV goes for easy/cheap coverage cause (ad) revenue sucks right now. This Arizona stuff is essentially pre-packaged by American/foreign networks so there's minimal work involved in delivering that kinda "news".

We're owned by CTV and I'm privvy to how they pick and choose their stories. It's ridiculously tied to their own financial interests. It shouldn't be surprising to hear but you naively expect the news to be somewhat unbiased. Well, lol.

Reading is probably the answer but I was kind of hoping to tie in my newfound mission to be better informed with my ongoing mission to stay physically fit.

In other words, I work out while the news is on. Can't do that while reading.

But I did not imagine how poor the TV news is. I can't see staying with it.

Democracy Now is good, and I also enjoy BBC World News America. Don't go to mainstream news outlets to find out what's going on in the world, you're better off dedicating 20 minutes a day to reading WikiNews. Just hook the TV up to the computer and set it on Auto-scroll with some good music playing in the background.
