News in general, in all forms, has become so debased and vulgar and unserious. Now all of us are paying the price. The problem began when news became tied to profits. The networks at one time used to run news as a loss leader, subsidized by entertainment. When that changed, and news started chasing ratings (and dollars), the problem began. When dollars started to dry up, things only got worse. Networks became desperate and resorted to making the news more like entertainment.

Good say.

Agree.

Cougar, you're smarter than I thought you were.

Yeah that is the fundamental problem with TV news. You have to realize that there is some dude setting the priorities for you and you have no idea what kind of spazz he/she is and what kinds of influences he/she is facing.

Presumably they are going to be influenced by what their research is telling them the most people want to see. So it becomes a lowest-common-denominator thing which seldom works out well.

Although I swear, no matter how hard I try, I can't imagine who the people are that would want these extended live feeds of these press conferences from Tucson - which CBC is still running with as one of their top stories. It's nice that Gabby opened her eyes and can shift a bit in bed but 10 minutes devoted to it? Come on man.

CTV has definitely moved way ahead of CBC in my personal ranking of news-at-noon options here.

Spot on.

Mudcat, did you know a Toronto Police Officer was was killed this week?
He was a hero, died chasing a stolen snowplough.

Now that is news.

I did know that, yes. The snowplow, after being stolen, was driven very carelessly and banged into many cars. The dead officer's father was also a police officer.

Now repeat that over and over for 15 minutes while showing various pictures of blocked off snowy streets with many parked cop cars - and that was CTV's coverage the day it happened.
