Rouge, before 9/11 Canadians and Americans could cross the border with a verbal declaration of citizenship, no proof required.

I used to cross from Fort Erie Ontario into Buffalo NY dozens of times a year to shop and go to bars and 99.9% of the time when stopped at the border they asked you what your citizenship was and where you were going and then said have a nice day.

Those days are gone forever.
