The amount of house one can buy in the burbs is astounding. If I could tolerate the idea of a 90-minute commute in the morning, we could buy a fokken mansion on the spot.

Not happening though. Not yet anyway.

Tiny rental condo it is for the next couple years.

And yes indeed Rogatien. Our current place is way too small for a baby. (The place I applied for also is but it's in a fantastic location and there's a daycare in the building itself.)
 
The apt. I applied for is a 750 sq ft "1br + den" - current market value is $385k, which is at the very low end of the 1+den range. Even if I get it we're going to outgrow it in 2 years tops.

$385k in St. Catharines (an hour away in no traffic) gets you a 4bed/3bath 2500 sq ft fokken castle. Astounding.

But I'm the type of guy who gets out of bed at 8:30, takes a 3-minute shower and gets to work at 9:15. Can't do that from a castle.
 
Matty Hamilton to Toronto is a 55 minute trip (with no traffic). St Catharines to Toronto is a minimum 95 minute trip with no traffic. I used to make plenty of trips to/from both locations when I drove a bus.

No way you will ever make it to Toronto from St Catharines in an hour in a vehicle.
Thinking about speeding? Yeah the QEW is full of OPP patrols and speed traps, especially between St Catharines and Hamilton.

PS: Kudos for spelling St Catharines correctly. Many people mistakenly spell it St Catherines.

Either way it's not happening. We're just musing.

My great grandmother bought a new house on Crawford ave (Queen West between Dufferin/Bathurst) for $7500 back before WW2. Plommer lived in it until 1969 when she died.

That house now has a value of approx. $650k. Great gramma plommer is rolling in her grave.

Won't do that with children anyway. Get the house now. Commute is a nice relaxing time alone.

You can get a 6 bedroom, 5 bath where I'm for $400,000. Don't forget to look at the property taxes when shopping for a house. You may afford the mortgage but can't afford the taxes.
